Just found that if you are installing on mysql 5.5, you must change every instance of TYPE=MyISAM to ENGINE=MyISAM in install_db_core.inc. This is due to a syntax change in mysql.
perl -pi -e "s/TYPE=MyISAM/ENGINE=MyISAM/g" install_db_core.inc
perl -pi -e "s/TYPE=MyISAM/ENGINE=MyISAM/g" install_db_core.inc
