Thanks to everyone who came. I thought some of the most interesting comments where when Chris mentioned that he has changed thinking around testing from trying to push testing to the lowest level possible, to an approach more centered around testing at service interfaces, thus making the tests more maintainable. He also mentioned (after most had left) that recent work to transition some services to be implemented in PHP (from Java) had brought in an interesting mix of new problems, including having to maintain multiple service clients, and also around having to be more careful about ensuring common data representation for things like Date/Time.

On the "what level to test at" topic, there is a great video (actually Chris sent me this link about a year ago) by Ian Cooper
On my latest project, we have made this video required watching for devs rolling onto the project.
