LUFTHANSA, (LH), has always had a less love and more hate relationship with Travel Agents. Its initiative of "ZERO" commission and consequent advise to Travel Agents to charge Transaction Fee (TF) has had telling effect. So much so, over 30% agents have pulled down their shatters. With the introduction of "opensky" policy, this has led the airlines to unleash "predatory pricing" to the detriment of the Air Travellers. No less a person than the Prime Minister of India had to express his concern over this development.
Now comes the fresh assault. Lufthansa has suggested that Travel Agents who do the booking through the GDS, will have to pay Euro 16/- (Rs.1200/- approx) extra!! This is not just arm-twisting, but open blackmail. The reason for this audacity is that LH is aware that there are vested interests in the Industry, who would go to any extent to ensure small and medium agents are wiped out.
IATA Agents Association of India, has a track record of opposing all the ANTI AGENT moves by vested interests and has yet again opposed tooth and nail, this adverse move by LH. Letter issued to Mr. Wolfgang Will, Director - South Asia of LH is attached for the information of readers.
It is time, all Travel Agents, took a stand and supported IAAI, to ensure, that the high-handed tactics by vested interests do not jeopardise their survival.
