Yes I  did a search on this topic and did not find much info.

My set up is FX9500 with feibot mats and side anternnas or 2 feibot mats.

For cost effectiveness we place the timing chip on the front of the bib without any foam, but can never seem to get a really good read percentage. My understanding is that the foam on the back is to create a gap from the runner to the tag, am I loosing read becuase its on the front?

We place the tags vertically.

Thanks

I generally put mine on the back, but I have a few bibs I've designed over the years that have the tag on the front as part of the design. Front or back shouldn't change anything as long as you have them in the correct direction for your antennas. Poor read percentages are generally about issues with antenna placement or cable damage.

Foam can help, but in my opinion not enough to make it worthwhile, especially with the current generation of tags. They're light years better than they were before the r6 dog bones became the norm.

What chips are you using? I used avery dennison M750 place vertically on the back of the bib with no foam on my last race and only had about three misses total, it was also raining for most of the races.
My setup was fx9600 with one feibot mat and one side antenna.

I am with Patrick and Christopher.  I have only put my chip on the back with no foam and have not had any issues, other than those who affix the bib in a weird place.
My new norm is tyvek shoe tags that you put the chip on one side. I use one antenna and the mat, I have had 100% reads. I am in love with them!
Great invention. I attached a picture.
