I time cross country races and coach a junior high cross country team. One of the parents of a kid I coach is a computer science instructor at Washington University in St. Louis. This parent reached out and asked if I had any software needs that could be a class project for her class. It looks like the class is going to create an interval timing app I can use to keep times of all the kids when we do track intervals. My team has 30-40 runners. One kid is a sub 5 minute miler and other kids struggle to run a mile. So it quickly becomes a chaotic mess when trying to keep track of everyone's invterval times.
My vision for the program is that runners will type their number and press enter to start their interval. The RFID reader will end their interval and start a recovery countdown that will display similar to the public display in agee. Runner then types in their number to start the next interval. Software would have to ignore any reads for runners who haven't started their interval.
Since I like to run with the team I am excited about being able to put the clipboard down and run with the kids.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would love to hear them. Also if you have a project idea for a group of Washington University students please let me know and I can pass it along.
