Looking back at old posts I see people talking about the benefits of having static IP address on devices.

Is there a downside to creating static IP addresses?

I am getting a kit together and just thinking about assigning static IPs.
I know the devices need to share a sub net (still learning what that really means).

Right now the Impinj R420 has an IP : 192.168.0.111
Would it make sense to go with:

Laptop 1: 192.168.0.6
Laptop 2: 192.168.0.7
FX9600: 192.168.0.8
Router: 192.168.0.9
Brother HL-L2320D printer - does it really need a static IP?

Thanks

you absolutely want to use static ip addresses...i only use dhcp for internet connections.

the ability to ping and troubleshoot will save you tons of agravation and inconsistent behavior with the equipment.

if you are running lynx at all or ever will set your computers at least 5  numbers apart.. that way cameras can come on.
sure, your readers and other devices can be one after another but computers if running lynx need to be spaced.
i set my lynx to .5 and then everything else .20 on...

if the printer is on the network as opposed to usb cable, again, i always prefer static ip's
as for the router i like to set it at either .1 or .254
also with a router, make note as to what ip rane dhcp is set to and do not assign numbers in that range. you can also change the range or better yet disable dhcp : )

I had all kinds of problems using statics due to other issues like a cheap used 9500 which would not let me in to give it a static.  Same thing for everytime I was trouble shooting (loose Ethernet connection at CPU, forgot to turn off WiFi before initializing, etc.)  Then I discovered that I can't mix (maybe you can) static and DHCP.  So after you paperclip a reader and try to reconnect to a static ip cpu....    I still set up statics though because they connect significantly faster.  If you have 5 things that can go wrong, you are dealing with 2^5 instead of 2^4 possible issues.
