Hey there. I want to start my first Vice City playthrough (PS2 version...). Do you recommend me to play the 1.40 version (with tear gas, and the Lionel Richie song), or should I grab a later version? Any suggestions?

AFAIK 2.01 still has the tear gas and it fixed a few major bugs, but it doesn't have Running with the night on Flash FM. Imo if you want to have that particular song then go for 1.40, otherwise I would probably choose 2.01.

Dumb question: If I want to switch between 2.01 and 1.40, will I be able to use the same save game? So, I play 1.40, get annoyed by the detonator bug, and then I want to try 2.01 - will my savegame work with that version, and vice versa?

I honestly have no idea, I've never tried it and with a quick search I can't seem to find anything. Probably saves should be interchangeable between 1.40 and 2.01, maybe it could become an issue between 1.40 and 3.00, but I'm just guessing.

A bit off topic maybe, but I'm just curious if other people know about this... While searching for VC versions, I saw a few archive.org links of a supposedly 4.00 dump. Is there really a 4.00 release of Vice City on PS2? I'd imagine it's another Haitian friendly version, but I've never heard of this release.

I was always wondering if the 4.00 came from The Trilogy Version on PS2 (and maybe some stand alone version too) or not, the last edition with some songs removed due to the copyright. That's because until today we can see a lot of Trilogy Version on PS2 still factory sealed on the sales websites like Ebay etc with a low price, people believe that this is the Trilogy Version released in 2006 but in fact most of them are an edition who came much later with some songs removed, we can see some details here from the member agent 47 -heads-up-if-your-buying-a-new-copy-of-vice-city/

I would have never imagined there were PS2 copies of Vice City with the post-2012 soundtrack, good to know if you're on the market looking for a new copy. Those looking for a PAL release probably won't have to worry about it, 4.00 was launched only in the NTSC-U region according to here: -e090-41ff-ad58-fc4b1044fb95.

I've just tested VC and SA (PS2 version using Xbox Series X controller), controls might take some getting used to. I mean, shooting and driving on the face buttons? Thats tough when you're used to IV's and V's controls, or even SA PC version.

@gtaonefan Yes PCSX2. I've set-up the controller bindings for my Xbox controller to match the PS2 buttons. Can I create different "controller schemes"? Because changig the scheme just for SA/VC/III might mess up the controls for other games I have.

Not entirely sure as I haven't used it, but in the LilyPad general settings, there are options "Save Bindings" and "Load Bindings" that allow saving control configurations to a file it seems. With "Restore Defaults" it's possible to also reset back to the default settings.

NOTE: All version save files can exist in the same memory card however, just loading them becomes a hassle since releases one and two have to be booted without that card to allow new game to happen and then load, if the version you're playing doesn't have the newest save file saving date, as that's what the game tries to load - newest save file - if it detects any files being present.

I still have my 360 here, and I've read that the so-called "Xbox Collection Double Pack" (which contains III and VC for OG Xbox) is playable on 360 via backwards-compatibility. Anyone know if this is the Haitian-friendly version of Vice City? That would be a no-go for me. Can't find anything on Google unfortunately.

EDIT: Another question: If I buy the OG trilogy on R* games launcher, will I be able to mod those versions (downgrading, getting the cut songs back, getting the "pre-Haitian-friendly" VC version most importantly?).

I have explored the 4.00 version, and I can confirm that like I said above, many songs were cut. I made a video between the differents PS2 versions for the missing songs =TyUQofTXrE8 . The interesting thing in the 4.00 version is that the songs were cut on the radio, but unlike the Android, IOS and later version, they didn't cut the songs from the cutscenes (by example we can still hear Billie Jean in "Spilling the Beans" and Bark at the Moon in "Messing with the Man").

Yes the game might be removed from the store now. I remember the version on the PS3 was the last one with the songs cut (so basically identical to the 4.00 but also with the songs removed from the cutscenes)

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is a 2002 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It is the fourth main game in the Grand Theft Auto series, following 2001's Grand Theft Auto III, and the sixth entry overall. Set in 1986 within the fictional Vice City (based on Miami and Miami Beach), the single-player story follows mobster Tommy Vercetti's rise to power after being released from prison and becoming caught up in an ambushed drug deal. While seeking out those responsible, Tommy gradually builds a criminal empire by seizing power from other criminal organisations in the city.

The game is played from a third-person perspective and its world is navigated on foot or by vehicle. The open world design lets the player freely roam Vice City, consisting of two main islands. The game's plot is based on multiple real-world people and events in Miami such as Cubans, Haitians, and biker gangs, the 1980s crack epidemic, the Mafioso drug lords of Miami, and the dominance of glam metal. The game was also influenced by the films and television of the era, most notably Scarface and Miami Vice. Much of the development work constituted creating the game world to fit the inspiration and time period; the development team conducted extensive field research in Miami while creating the world. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was released in October 2002 for the PlayStation 2, in May 2003 for Windows, and in November 2003 for the Xbox.

Upon its release, Vice City received critical acclaim, with praise particularly directed at its music, gameplay, story, and open world design. However, the game also generated controversy over its depiction of violence and racial groups, sparking lawsuits and protests. Vice City became the best-selling video game of 2002 and has sold over 17.5 million copies. Considered one of the most significant titles of the sixth generation of video games and one of the greatest video games ever made, it won numerous year-end accolades including Game of the Year awards from several gaming publications.

Since its release, the game has received numerous ports to many gaming platforms. An enhanced version was released for mobile platforms in 2012 for the game's tenth anniversary, and a further enhanced version was released in 2021. Its successor, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, was released in October 2004, and a prequel, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, was released in October 2006.

In combat, auto-aim can be used as assistance against enemies.[11] Should the player take damage, their health meter can be fully regenerated through the use of health pick-ups.[12] Body armour can be used to absorb gunshots and explosive damage, but is used up in the process.[13] When health is entirely depleted, gameplay stops and the player respawns at the nearest hospital while losing all weapons and armour and some of their money.[5] If the player commits crimes while playing, the game's law enforcement agencies may respond as indicated by a "wanted" meter in the head-up display (HUD), which increases as the player commits more crimes. On the meter, the displayed stars indicate the current wanted level, and the higher the level, the greater the response for law enforcement[5] (for example, at the maximum six-star level, police helicopters and military swarm to lethally dispatch players).[8]
