Hi all,

In case you have a hankering for a silent movie with live orchestral accompaniment this week, I wanted to let you know that the NEU orchestra's playing for a couple silent films this Wednesday at noon in St. Ann's (on the corner of St. Stephen and Gainsborough). I'll be there, cello-ing away, and I think it will be a pretty unique concert if you'd like to check it out. Details are below.

Jodie!

Please join us for an hour-long concert that celebrates the release of a four-DVD set produced by the National Film Preservation Foundation, an organization charged by Congress to preserve our nation's film heritage. The DVD set is devoted to how early films treated controversial social issues.

The concert will feature live orchestral accompaniment to a screening of parts of Where Are My Children?, a full-length 1915 film that tackles eugenics and abortion in a melodramatic setting. Also on the program will be Voice of the Violin, a short comedy from 1909 by renowned director D. W. Griffith about a violin teacher who gets involved in the anarchist movement.

In addition to the films, Prof. Allen Feinstein will discuss how composers and conductors work with silent film, and give some background on the project.
