Für Evan Hansen (Ben Platt) ist die Zeit als Teenager nicht leicht. Während seine Mutter Heidi (Julianne Moore) als Krankenschwester Überstunden schiebt und versucht, sich und ihren Jungen durchzubringen, leidet Evan unter Angststörungen und wird in der Schule aus ungewöhnlicher Außenseiter wahrgenommen. Um sich seinen Sorgen zu stellen, soll Evan für seine Therapiesitzungen jeden Tag einen Brief an sich selbst schreiben. Allerdings gelangt einer dieser Briefe in die Hände des rebellischen und unglücklichen Connor Murphy (Colton Ryan), was für Connor zum Auslöser zahlreicher Notlügen wird. Als Connor Selbstmord begeht, finden dessen Eltern Cynthia (Amy Adams) und Larry (Danny Pino) Evans Brief bei ihm. In dem Glauben, Evan und Connor wären beste Freunde gewesen, wollen sie mehr über ihren verschlossenen Sohn herausfinden und bringen Evan damit in eine verzwickte Lage, aus der er sich nicht mehr herausziehen kann.
