I imagine the backlash will be strong among the cognoscenti, but I’m not sure what good it will do. The major players in the software market are all moving to subscription based services anyways, Office 365, Adobe’s CS suite, &c. Microsoft is also taking a cue from some of the other video game publishers who are trying to destroy the used game market and rental services like GameFly. A lot of the newer multiplayer games are coming with unlock codes for multiplayer subscriptions, requiring resale purchasers to purchase additional keys to get online. Rumor has it that the next XBOX will have games locked to the physical console or account as well. http://games.slashdot.org/story/13/02/07/0216222/xbox-720-could-require-always-on-connection-lock-out-used-games. Since everything seems to be moving to digital distribution anyways, most of this makes sense, but it’s still an ugly move.
I’ll be watching Slashdot to see how this one goes over.
