Request for submission of Interfaith reflections on global tax justice:

Background:
In November 2025, the third round of negotiations for the United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation will take place in Nairobi, Kenya. This marks a historic moment: it is the first time these negotiations are being hosted on African soil, reflecting the growing momentum for a more inclusive and equitable global tax architecture.

Religious actors have a unique and powerful role to play in the push for a just UN Tax Convention. With moral authority, grassroots reach, and long-standing commitment to economic justice religious actors are vital voices in shaping a fairer global tax system. During the Jubilee 2000 campaign, faith leaders were instrumental in mobilizing global support for debt cancellation, framing it as a moral imperative rooted in biblical principles of justice and restoration. That same prophetic voice is urgently needed today to challenge unjust tax systems, expose illicit financial flows, and to advocate for a convention that prioritizes equity and the common good. Religious leaders are already engaging communities and policymakers on tax justice, and their involvement in the UN process can amplify calls for transparency, accountability, and redistribution.

Faith-based engagements during the UN Tax Convention Negotiations:

During the UN Tax Convention Negotiations in Nairobi, Norwegian Church Aid, sister organisations and partners will facilitate spaces for faith actors to engage policy makers, media and their constituencies through several means. Advocacy takes many forms, and the intention is to coordinate our initiatives to the wider civil society advocacy initiatives. In addition, there will be three specific faith-based initiatives for tax justice targeting the UN Tax Convention negotiations in Nairobi in November 2025:

1.      Sunday 9th November in November: Interfaith action/vigil, where faith actors, diplomats, negotiators and civil society are invited to reflect on the moral imperatives and actions for tax justice

 2.      Disseminating easily accessible theological reflections on why global tax justice is needed (through pamphlets, civil society newsletters and other physical and online formats)

 3.      Daily theological reflections/prayers during the UN tax convention negotiations, potentially in a multi-faith prayer room at the UN complex in Nairobi or a similar space
