I came across the sad news of the passing of our Ambassador in Washington (I interacted with him, for the first time, during/following PMB's visit to Washington).  A good man who is passionately committed to the Nigerian cause.  May his soul rest in peace.

Death of Nigeria's Ambassador to the United States

Press Statement

Mark C. Toner

Washington, DC

August 28, 2015

We were saddened to learn of the passing yesterday of Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, the Honorable Adebowale Ibidapo Adefuye. Nigeria lost a distinguished ambassador who will be dearly missed. On behalf of the people of the United States and President Obama, we express our deepest condolences to his wife and his family.

Over the past five years under Ambassador Adefuye’s leadership, we enjoyed a collaborative and open dialogue that yielded real results such as the U.S.-Nigeria Bi-National Commission, a strategic dialogue that succeeded in expanding mutual cooperation across a broad range of shared interests.

Ambassador Adefuye helped build the Commission into a collaborative forum that has resulted in progress on issues critical to Nigeria’s and the United States’ shared future.

A former Fulbright scholar and participant of the International Visitor Exchange Program, Ambassador Adefuye had a keen understanding of the United States and developed strong relationships with his American colleagues.

His last major assignment as Ambassador was to receive President Muhammadu Buhari and his delegation during the president’s official visit to the United States in July, during which President Buhari met with President Obama and other senior U.S. officials.

The success of this visit speaks to Ambassador Adefuye’s skill as a diplomat. His tenure helped significantly strengthen the U.S.-Nigerian partnership.

Though I did not meet him in person, but from what I have read about him, from both individual accounts and the US government, after his sudden demise, there is no doubt that Ambassador Adebowale Adefuye was a good man who made Nigeria proud in his diplomatic calling. My condolences to his immediate family and to the Nigerian Government. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

Unfortunately, good trees don't stand tall for too long in the forest. Ambassador Adefuye came to us in a hurry and left us in a hurry. May his legacy of integrity, patriotism, selfless and meritorious service stay with us for an indefinite time, and may we continue to bask in the sunshine of his nicety for a long time to come. My heart goes out to his family, compendium of colleagues, and a wide array of friends around the world. I pray that our great nation be blessed with the reincarnation of such much-needed selfless souls as Adefuye in the service of our nation. So long, our man with a giant heart!

Very true Mr. Afolayan:

I met late Professor Adefuye first when I joined the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lagos in 1980. He was then one of the youngest professors on campus. He clearly demonstrated likeness towards any new academic staff who like him was a "flyer. Whenever he was on my floor and on his way to his office upstairs, at the Faculty of Arts Building, he would stop by and say hello and we became close. He was at the christening of my daughter shortly thereafter. We lost touch with each other about the time he was appointed Ambassador to Jamaica and I was in the U.S. on sabbatical leave.

Most recently, when he was being savagely attacked by some ethnic apologists, concerning his credentials, I stood up in his defense stating that he was as qualified, if not more qualified than any who had held the position of Ambassador to the U.S. He was a true patriot indeed and a scholar of repute. These qualities, no one can deny him. My admiration for him is based on these qualities.

I commiserate with his dutiful wife and children and wish for his soul, perfect rest. Adieu Professor Adefuye.
