Sheikh Gumi’s Unity Message Meets Igbo Historical Reality
Sheikh Abubakar Gumi has once again spoken about national unity, saying Hausa, Fulani, Igbo, Yoruba, and other ethnic nationalities are one family and must coexist peacefully. He also argued that Nigeria should stop looking to the United States for security support, proposing instead alliances with countries like Turkey, Pakistan, or even Iran.
However, for many Igbo people, such statements ignore deep historical truths. Nigeria has never truly functioned as a united nation, and unity cannot be imposed through narrow, sectional perspectives. To the Igbo, unity does not mean abandoning identity, freedom, and hard-earned civilization in exchange for alliances with foreign powers whose global records raise serious concerns.
The question remains: can instability be solved by importing ideologies linked to further instability? If not, then these calls amount to nothing more than risky rhetoric that fails to resonate with the Igbo people.
History has taught the Igbo lessons of marginalization, exclusion, and broken promises. True unity cannot exist where respect, justice, and self-determination are absent. No people can be forced into oneness under pressure or threats masked as dialogue.
To Sheikh Gumi and others who share this view: the Igbo people are guided by memory, principle, and culture—not empty slogans. Our values matter, our people matter, and our freedom is non-negotiable
