President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday said his administration would work closely with the leadership of the National Assembly to remove political and bureaucratic bottlenecks stalling the operationalisation of state police in Nigeria.

Speaking at the State House, Abuja, during a meeting with members of the Northeast Governors Forum led by Babagana  Zulum, the President said the time had come for a clear, collective path towards community-based policing that reflects the peculiar needs of different regions.

“I have been looking at the security situation more carefully. I have seen the Civilian JTF react to the security challenges, finding so many creative ways to protect neighbourhoods and communities around you, and that provoked my thinking about state police again.“

Me like this very much because I have been saying, for more than a decade plus, that we need state police. It’s one of the logical approach we must adopt in order to have a save & secure country. 

Another approach we need to adopt is secure our borders, build barriers where practically possible and have a robustly supported security posts at our borders that we cannot secure with barriers because of nature or whatever.

This is a positive development.

We have been advocating for this.

The Senate should completely scrap the Nigerian Police, whenever State Police is consolidated, 

EFCC should remain the only federal Police force focused on investigations.

 The Nigerian Police has remained a national embarrassment; obstructing traffic and extorting Nigerians daily at illegal roadblocks.

NNPC should also be scrapped.

The NPF can be divided into

Federal Crime Intelligence and Criminal Investigation Agency (FCICIA)headed by a DG.It is like FBI under Homeland Dept.It will be under the Ministry of Internal 

Federal Mobile Paramilitary Force (FMPF) similar to National Guard with a Commandant General in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

All officers will undego under basic training at NDA .

In war situation ONLY ,the Paramilitary Force will be under the  MOD and be the 4th Arm of the Armed Forces

The IG becomes Inspector General of Police for 

Training Standards,Performance Monitoring,Evaluation and Assessment not COMMAND of State and Community Police at the Ministry of Internal Affars where he submits half yearly report through the Minster to the President and NASS with Copies to all Govs and Chairs of LGA

Transfer Customs and Excise to the Ministry of Finance.

The Immigration Service and DSS(strictly domestic Intelligence and counter intelligence) are under the Ministry of Internal Affairs not the Presidency.

FUNDING

All the states govs have been providing money and vehicles to the army and the police in their States for over 20 years now in addition to cash gifts.

The States donot need equal number of personnel and donot need to build Barracks,they donot need funding from FG which does not fund AMOTEKUN in the SW and  VIGILANTES etc in other states.

Organisation and Governance.AMOTEKUN is a model 

State Police is there in all states.NASS is to do the needful now that the Presido don gree.iw
