You are correct Imperial Wizard. The woman maintained, throughout her life, that Gowon was the father of her son but Gowon, like a cunning bum, not only denied fathering the young man, he also made fun of her publicly and dragged her through the courts needlessly. Had Gowon stood up like a man and also been a father, it is possible that the younger Gowon would not be the jail bird that he is today.

 

Are we supposed to commend him for relying on a DNA test 48 years later, even though the young man looks, and has always looked, just like him? Yakubu Gowon is a dishonest man, period. The same dishonesty he applied in orchestrating the assassination of his commander-in-chief; in discarding the Aburi Accord; in sanctioning genocide and mass starvation of innocent civilians; in tacitly going along with Dimka's plot to assassinate the equally brutish Murtala Mohammad's, he has reprised in his dealings with his own flesh and blood for 48 years. 

 

This Yakubu Gowon, despite his evil deeds, goes around Nigeria passing himself off as a born again Christian and soliciting mass prayer sessions and prayer warriors. Were there a God and a heaven, Gowon would certainly smell neither -- his hands are drenched in the blood of the innocent and in offending and oppressing those (Edith and her son) who meant him no harm.

Yakubu Gowon, former Head of the Nigerian Military Government, during the Nigerian civil war, has acknowledged that Jack Musa Gowon is his son, following DNA tests.  The 48-year-old man had returned to Nigeria after serving a 20-year imprisonment in California, U.S.  A statement issued by Gen. Gowon himselfm read:

“Following years of doubts and speculation, a DNA test was recently conducted to ascertain the paternity of Musa Gowon who recently returned to the country. The results of the tests were conclusive and they confirm his paternity. We, the family, are working to assist in his rehabilitation following a very difficult period in his life. As we look forward to the future with faith in God, we request that our privacy be respected. Thank you”

Many Igbo have accused Gowon of hypocrisy in carrying on sexual relationship with an Igbo woman, Miss Edith Ike, (who later married Mr. Okongwu), while he was slaughtering and starving to death millions of the Igbo during the war.

General (Dr) Yakudu Gowon is a gentleman per excellence.

Even in a very difficult time, as a family man, his urbanity is infectious.

Mistakes remain what define the fallibility of the human specie; it is an elegant way of revealing one's humanity to accept mistakes and move on.

In private and public, General Gowon is one of the few Nigerians that PMB holds in high esteem!

He once told us of him: "That Godly man ensured that we followed some rules of engagement during the prosecution of the war."  I believed him.

The late Lt. General MB Haladu, the former commandant at the Nigeria Army School of Infantry (NASI) Jaji, where I served as a Corper, once regaled us with a story in his area of operation during the civil war. Just after the Civil War, two Federal Soldiers killed two Nigerians of Igbo extraction. When asked the reason for their action, they said because they were Biafrans! Haladu, as the commanding officer of the small unit, put them on trial. After convicted of deliberate murder, Haladu decided to make them face firing squad at the very spot where the two Nigerians were killed. A unit commander could do that in a war time because of the urbanity of the Commander in Chief.

On Saturday, 6th June 1998 , General Gowon was in AKure (my first real contact with him!), in continuation of his pet project, Nigeria Prays. He said: " we did what was necessary to keep the Nation together. And we must be grateful to the people that we were fighting then that they accepted the terms of surrender without resorting to guerilla warfare." The popular statement  of "No victor, no vanquished" and his policy of three R's endeared him to many fair-minded Nigerians.

At the break out of the post-election violence in the Northern of the country in April 2011, it was when General Gowon called that GMB finally went on air to denounce the arsonists. Earlier, different sets of people had given him contradicting pieces of advice.

We must show understanding with General Gowon at this trying and challenging time of his life as a family man.

The same lack of testicular fortitude which characterized Gowon is what caused Musa Gowon untoward suffering all his life. Can any of us imagine what Musa Gowon has gone true in his life because of the cowardice and stupidity of Yakubu Gowon? I can only imagine what Miss Edith Ike (may her Soul rest in peace) went through in the hands of such a vile man. I hereby extol Madam Edith Ike. I am proud of her. I salute her courage. She stood her ground. She was and is a true Igbo amazon. She maintained her honesty and innocence even while she was maligned, demonized and harassed by Gowon and his bigoted family. She stood her ground and protected her boy to the best of her ability. Today even in death, she has been vindicated and the shame is on the congenital coward, Yakubu Gowon.  

Yakubu Gowon was too weak to uphold the Aburi Accord, which he negotiated, endorsed and signed. For the weakness and stupidity of Yakubu Gowon, one million of my people perished. 

He was too weak to enforce the reconstruction, reconciliation agreement he entered with Biafra to end the war.

Yes, Yakubu Gowon, for 42 years was not man enough to accept his own son.

It does not require a DNA, just look at the picture. If Yakubu Gowon needed a DNA to acknowledge that Musa Gowon is his biological son, he is a bloody fool.

In your very well articulated piece below which I read with relish, you wrote for me, too. I need not add much in as much as I would have loved to. There never was any gentleman nor honesty in the man whose acts of treachery and collusion in the military and political crisis of 1966 led to the catastrophic war of genocide against the people whose daughter he was sleeping with and impregnated. And as if that was not enough, he went on to deny his paternity of the son to cover up for his lasciviousness of an Igbo woman while spearheading the mass murders of her folks. Like you opined, that is why in my mind his so-called “Prayer for Nigeria” organization is not the piece paper on which is it written.

 

The first time I saw Jack Musa Gowon’s photo, I asked how on earth would Gowon deny his paternity of that handsome young man that has his looks 100%. Good there is modern day paternity test known as DNA. It is sad it had to come to that. If the dead did see, late Edith Ike will being saying, you Gowon over the years knew you fathered my son but denied him his rightful place in your life to avoid being seen as a murderous hypocrite. A man with egregiously flawed moral character.

 

I wish Jack Musa Ike-Gowon all the best as he goes through his long awaited and over-due rehabilitation process in the hands of a father and family that denied him for being partly Igbo.

KC Asagwara or Nebu, none was there during Gowon and Edith Ike's rendezvous.

Therefore, no one should pass judgment like passing gas.

This is what we know. 

The mother took the child to America.

There was a dispute on who fathered the child.

No one knows why Gowon said the child was not his. No one knows if Late Efith Ike had another lover on the side, and Gowon thought the other guy owned the child.  

Maybe she was spurned for another woman, no one knows.

However, the woman Edith took the child or had the child with her, far away from Gowon.

A bitter lawsuit, denial of parentage, all can be chalked under bad belly between the rejected woman and her lover.

If Gowon knowingly denied the child was his when the child was young innocent and unblemished, why accept him now when the child is grown, may be an ax murderer tougher life just got out of prison, and a shame to Gowon's name? Why?

Even now, a DNA test was done.

If Gowon already knew the child was his, I don't think he would have asked for a paternity test again. Having the child now when he is a "damaged good" is courageous, and shows Gowon as a good man with heart. 

It is not a sign of "egregiously flawed character", as KC Asagwara puts it.

If Gowon's character was flawed he wouldn't asked the grown ex-convict to even come around him, let alone have him proved to belong to his household, and accepted him in public.

I think Gowon shows himself as classy and honorable.

Not casting any aspersions, but sometimes women may be vicious if spurned by lover and anything goes.

Though it may have come a little late but it's never too late to do the right thing. Let's acknowledge the good news of the somewhat happy ending to an otherwise sad controversy. Gowon's errors didn't/don't make him an evil man or rubbish his NIGERIA PRAYS project. God is not looking to save saints but sinners. And God doesn't want the death of sinners but that they repent. Let him who has never sinned cast the first stone. 

I wish the late Ms Edith ‎Ike was alive to see this day. May her soul rest in peace and may God heal all that's broken in Musa's and the entire Gowons' (family) lives.

You have to pity these military men. Away from home. Away from every one. At least this honorable lady knew who she was doing it with. And stuck to her guns. And she has proven that Gowon was the man who thought he was just messing with just another lady. But he found out that she is an honorable lady, my nnemochie. 

As we talk about her and her son and Gowon, we must not forget to reflect on some folks on these forums who vaguely think that they are Igbo, but don't have a clue where they hail from in Igbo land. How do you identify these children? Very easy. By their last names. If he has as his last name Dan anything, you know right away that the name was derived from a location or event. Wow! Back in the early 80s, I was hanging out with this Musa Gowon, almost every night in Los Angeles. It was the Red Onion Restaurant/Nightclub on Wilshire Blvd in Los angeles, but he was very reserved as being the son of Gowon. We called him Musa Gowon of course but that was all as he never flashed to us as a son of one Nigerian Head of States. He was very intelligent but not very financially comfortable like he should have been. He was always in the company of the younger Igbo dudes and might have tried to hustle to make life comfortable, and got caught. I applaud him for the ability to convert such experience to something positive, like him, being a lawyer in prison. He was a smart and intelligent chap to even come around my caliber here in Los Angeles then. 

Let us just call this a happy ending story and God will propel the re united family to the right direction. As for Gen Gowon RTD, he did what he did as a profession but not as a human. I would have done the same in same predicament. I will pray for the family also

I played soccer for my high school in Nigeria, and all over Obalende, Ile-wiwo by Lagos central mosque, Mushin and all others.

Henry Nwosu was a pal, and playing soccer around was our game.

When I first got to London, I had the opportunity to practice with some second elevens, but for my knee hurt injury maybe I would have played pro.
