This song was an Africa-wide hit when we were kids in the 1970s. The catholic church, which was very powerful in Zaire of that time and held clout with its leader -- because Mobutu was a catholic and was raised by catholic missionaries -- wanted it banned and Verckys punished. The archbishop of Kinshasa met the president and tabled Rome's objection to this song, and demanded action. Mobutu asked him for a day to listen to the song since he had not heard it. Within 24 hours, Mobutu announced over the airwaves that not only was the song not going to be banned, it was going to get support from the state in its advertising. The popularity of this song went off the roof thereafter, without us knowing what it was about or the colonial mind control it overcame. Before he died about three years, Verckys' (Kiamuangana Mateta) youngest daughter remade this marvelous song, with him singing background and displaying his signature saxophone expertise.Enjoy it!Nebukadineze Adiele
