Another opinion on the Western region politics . Hmmm different stoked for folks !

Preamble

Few days ago, when Professor Yemi Osinbajo made his presidential ambition known publicly, some people began to call him names. The worst of it all was comparing him with Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, a political associate of Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. They claimed Osinbajo betrayed his political godfather just as Akintola betrayed his boss, Awolowo. I have been hearing this claim since I grew up to understand issues of life. However, as I grew up to study in the area of history, my curiosity pushed me to research into the lives of the two great men involved, Akintola and Awolowo. For the purpose of clarity on the issue of betrayal between the two, I will present to you my findings. 

How They Met

Akintola started his career as a teacher in a Baptist School. He left the School in order not to become a betrayer. How? He was the one who spearheaded a protest against the poor treatment of the Nigerian Tutors who were in the school. The Whites could not swallow such "insolence", so they dismissed the Tutors involved but retained Akintola who himself was at the center of the issue. They did that because he was brilliant and influential among the parents. Moreover, there was no replacement for the subject he was taking. They increased his salary and emoluments. BUT HE RESIGNED immediately in order to stand with his friends who were dismissed. That was the beginning of his freedom fighting.

He then left the School for an offer with a Newspaper House. He began to use the opportunity he got there to voice out his opinions on Nigeria Independence. He was gaining more fame in his new job. He then went for further studies abroad knowing fully well that he would not be able to fight the Colonial Masters unless he studied well. He became a lawyer. It was his boldness and prowess in journalism that endeared him to Awolowo. They both became freedom fighters and they brought several like-minded people together to form a civil organization for the Yorubas. Later, as a requirement for gaining Independence, political parties must be formed. As at that time, people like Nnamdi Azikiwe and others from the East were also active in fighting for Independence. Only the Northerners were not ready for the Independence. So, Akintola, Awolowo, and other well meaning Yorubas formed a political party. It was Akintola who was saddled with the responsibility of writing the Constitution for the party while Awolowo was made the party leader. 

The Real Issue

Let me spare some political stories of the competency of both eminent leaders. Awolowo became the Western Premier but the death of his deputy brought Akintola to that office. Later, Awolowo was aspiring to become the Head of the Central Government. Due to some laxities, he lost but he needed to stay in Lagos, the then seat of power to form opposition government. Akintola had earlier being handed over to as the Western Premier. He was working assiduously for the betterment of the Westerners. PROBLEM BEGAN when he discovered some funds were not remitted to the purse of the Western Government. He went ahead to block them. He discovered some Party members were collecting loans from the Government without repayment. He stopped that as well. HE NEVER KNEW that the said tax on beverages was being paid directly to the account of the wife of his predecessor. When Awolowo came back from Lagos to Ibadan, he summoned Akintola three times in a night and he went the three times. Awolowo was furious that Akintola blocked the payment of the tax on beverages to Mama's account (Awolowo's wife). He was also furious that Akintola blocked the loans being taken by the party loyalists but were never paid. When Akintola complained that they were not paying back the loans, Awolowo said that is the benefit they get as party loyalists. Akintola then said Awolowo as an elder should have told him the details of those things earlier being his former deputy. Awolowo commanded that he should go and restore those benefits. Akintola simply replied that such action would lead to paucity of funds on the side of the Government. AWOLOWO ASKED HIM TO RESIGN with immediate effect. In essence, AWOLOWO WANTED TO BE IN CONTROL OF THE WESTERN GOVERNMENT even though he has ceased being the Premier. The prominent Yoruba Kings held a meeting with them to settle the issue. They asked Akintola to prostrate and begged Awolowo. He did, but Awolowo insisted he must vacate the Premier Seat, and walked out on the prominent Yoruba Kings. That was when Akintola rose to say would Awolowo turn himself to God. The Kings were unhappy with the situation as they left. That was the beginning of the political problem in the Western Region even till now.

If I may ask  WHERE IS THE BETRAYAL BEING TALKED ABOUT? WHO IS THE BETRAYER? If you call Akintola a betrayer, then HE BETRAYED CORRUPTION. He fought for the Masses. He would not support public funds to be diverted. IS HE A BETRAYER? 

NOTE

I checked my facts with many sources both written documents and oral narrations before I wrote. The sources are mostly from outside Ogbomosho, the Hometown of Akintola. If you know A VERIFIED contrary opinion, please I am open to further learning. I wrote this to clear the air on the wrong impression being carried around. About Imperial:

First time I knew Imperial existed on CyberWorld was our arguments on his degradation of Awo’s reputation.

Imperial was a PDP man at that time and in the corner of his mentor who was the most corrupt governor ever to rule a state in SW, whose name was Alao-Akala.

So my people, this is not his first rodeo, Imperial has been at it for a long time.

Imperial with one Alagba who was teaching at some Univ in Georgia were really into discrediting Awolowo, bashing Awo just to place credence on the desecration of Awo’s statue in Ibadan…….they were supporting the most corrupt governor in SW history, Late Alao-Akala. 

At that time, Akala destroyed Awolowo’s statue in Ibadan, these two guys were supporting his action which, I strongly believed, was engineered by the high-priest of corruption, named Obasanjo.

In order to justify Akala’s unreasonable action, Imperial and co. limited, were maligning Awo’s name.

I’m guessing Imperial is backing a candidate right now, and his actually is to discredit Tinubu. But why use Awo to do his dirty job?

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was actually the one who betrayed Yemi Osinbajo if truth should be told. Considering that Osinbajo is the one occupying the position of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, convention gives him a priority to fly the flag of his party at the end of their tenure (Buhari/Osinbajo), except in a situation where he is either not interested or is considered a non-performer.

Note that we are not talking about who would be the president of the Yoruba nation. We are talking about who would replace PMB as the next executive President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Tinubu is politically savvy and therefore should have known that by recommending Osinbajo as Buhari's running mate that finally made him the VP, the man (Osinbajo), as of right and protocol, has become the first most qualified candidate, indeed primus inter pares amongst those to be considered by their party to fly their party's flag for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the expiration of their second and FINAL term.

What Tinubu should have done is to honourably support Osinbajo to fly the flag of their party, if the latter showed interest in running for the job. But on the contrary, Tinubu jumped the gun and went straight to Buhari (without consulting the VP), to let him know about his intention to contest, to achieve what he called a lifetime ambition. He should have heard first from the VP - Osinbajo. 

Because he conscientiously and craftily jumped the gun - knowing that Osinbajo would be interested in his (Osinbajo) conventionally rightful position, he has, ipso facto, betrayed Osinbajo Big Time! Osinbajo knows it and has decided to fight for what actually belongs to him. Meka

A better question is “How can the Western Region government seize assets of an entity that is being claimed here as part of the Western Region government when it is not possible for government to seize assets from itself?”

The fact that no one here is disputing that the Western Region government seized assets from NIPC and without being challenged then and till date is undisputed evidence that the NIPC was a private entity set up and and run with Western Region funds to allow its owners, led by Awolowo, freedom of spending decisions - bypassing the Western Region Legislature; a fact that resulted in the illegal enrichment of its conflict of interest directors - especially, Shonibare, Maja, and Rewane.

While there is no proof that Awolowo, himself, directly benefited from this heist, there is no evidence that he did not do so indirectly.

Okala’s puppy dog defense of everything Awolowo, even in the face of stark evidence to the contrary, is a very strange phenomenon for an Ikwerre and a man of God.

Imperial is deluding himself if he thinks the majority of the Yoruba people are listening to him.

Reasonable minds tend to wonder Imperial’s motives for starting this non-issue topic at this time. He’s not discussing even OBJ’s corruption from 1999 to about 2006. Imperial is not interested in GEJ’s misrule, or Yar Aduba’s dead or alive scandal.

But for the italicized and underlined sentence in the excerpt above, one would have shouted alleluia to Steven Kueberuwa's saying something devoid of drunkenness in a long time. Kueberuwa showcased the bad human being that he is by admitting that no evidence linked Awo directly to corruption/heisting of public funds, yet he implied that such lacking in evidence does not mean that Awo did not indirectly enrich himself corruptly. This type of evil mentality is usually at the height of my disputes with Steven Kueberuwa on these forums -- he deploys dishonesty and poor/corrupt scholarship standard of reasoning to getting to his devious aims.

What properly educated and honest person would translate the absence of direct evidence of corrupt enrichment to mean possible evidence of indirect corrupt enrichment? In other words, Steven Kueberuwa is dishonestly and corruptly asking Awo followers to prove a zero, something that no properly educated person engages in? Does it make any sense to Steven Kueberuwa that a Commission that found "no proof that Awolowo directly benefited from this heist" would have not found evidence of indirect corrupt enrichment against him if such a possibility existed?  

Everything else that Steven Kueberuwa stated in the excerpt is sound but he rarely utters sound ideas without impeaching the same ideas before finishing making them. But for that lone sentence, he would have set a record today.

Just for the correction. I worked for Papa and he counselled and shook hands with me and a few other youths at the EriJoy Motel, Trans Amadi, Port Harcourt where he lodged with a fleet of his handlers and cooks for mcirca four days. In his entourage were also Ebenezer Babatope (Director of Organising, UPN) and Chief MCK Ajuluchukwu (Director of Information and Research) amongst others. I was fresh from College of Science & Technology, Port Harcourt and joined the UPN (1978/79) and was made the Campaign Strategist of the Youth Wing of the party (UPN) in Rivers State - the first of its kind amongst political parties in the State at the time. Others later copied. I surrounded myself with a cream of brilliant members of the Youth Service Corps vanguard, serving in Port Harcourt at the time - such as Banji Kuroloja, Popoola, Wale Kolapo ( a very brilliant and gifted orator) and many others whose names I can't recollect for now. As Youth Corppers, they were not allowed to play partisan politics at the time. So, some of them mutilated their names (if you like) to avoid being caught. For example Banji Kuroloja went as Ban Roloja. They were very helpful to my office. I was given a brand new Toyota Hiace and a driver 24/7 to operate. 

Papa particularly took interest in me and mentioned me as a symbol of emulation for other youths in his brief address to us at the hotel. 

I sold Awo's Four Cardinal Point Programme to every nook and cranny of Port Harcourt and Rivers State as a whole. I'm talking about 1) Free Education at all Levels, 2). Free Medical Services 3) Integrated Rural Development and 4). Full and Gainful Employment to all Nigerians.

I was virtually 24/7 with late Wenike Briggs - the Governorship candidate of the Party in Rivers State. That's how I came to know folks like Ambey Bassey (National Treasurer of the party), Prof Ambrose Ali (Governorship candidate of the party in the Old Bendel State), Barr Philiip Umeadi (Awo's running mate), et al. So, don't just stay in the comfort of your house or office and say what you don't know about based on the figment of your imagination. When I talk about  Papa (Chief Obafemi Awolowo), I talk from a position of sound authority based on hard empirical evidences.

Unfortunately we failed to capture power in Rivers State - not even through the working alliance we had with other three parties, viz. NPP. GNPP and PRP. I left Nigeria in the twilight of the same year, 1979. The rest is history. Meka

By the time all this stuff was going on, I was below political age snd engrossed with secondary school work and academics at Federal School of Science, a point in your life that you must have been a toddler or younger.

Unless, you developed a taste for politics at a very young age and had a very good mentor!

At any rate, you clearly have command of the details of the political going ons at that time.

The only other thing that I was aware of at the time and can add is that it is Awolowo’s behavior as if he is the owner of the Western Region that made him insist on telling Akintola how to run it, while he was no longer premier but the leader of the opposition in the federal government, that eventually precipitated the “Wetie Riots” in the West and led to the military coup and eventual Civil War.

Even so, my view of who Akintola was has been much improved by your testimony because the only thing I remember from him is the ‘Okpara yio pa yin…’ in his radio political campaign for premier.

I remember taking my best friend to task when I first met him decades ago in the US and found out that he named his after him because I had such a negative image of him!

Be careful, though, not to appear to or endorse some of the usual malevolent filth being piggybacked on your excellent and dispassionate presentations on this topic.

Milking politicians is a way of life for Reuben Eluke. In his assumed name of Chukwuemeka Ọkala, Governor Peter Ọdili sent monthly stipends to an Ikwere organization of less than 10 people he headed in London. Ọdili’s successor, Omehia followed suit and Eluke garnered his group with a declaration that Amaechi should withdraw his electoral challenge against Omehia from the Supreme Court in the best interest of Ikwere. Before this declaration could even reach Rivers state, the Supreme Court sacked Omehia and Eluke and gang sent an immediate congratulatory message to Amaechi, who subsequently continued doling patronages to Eluke’s group, up to flying the pigmy first class to his second inauguration. I heard that Wike hasn’t kept up with the payment, hence Eluke basically has no value for him.

Bottom-line, Reuben Eluke is one of Nigeria’s plagues; his words are hollow and valueless.

Milking politicians is a way of life for Reuben Eluke. In his assumed name of Chukwuemeka Ọkala, Governor Peter Ọdili sent monthly stipends to an Ikwere organization of less than 10 people he headed in London. Ọdili’s successor, Omehia followed suit and Eluke garnered his group with a declaration that Amaechi should withdraw his electoral challenge against Omehia from the Supreme Court in the best interest of Ikwere. Before this declaration could even reach Rivers state, the Supreme Court sacked Omehia and Eluke and gang sent an immediate congratulatory message to Amaechi, who subsequently continued doling patronages to Eluke’s group, up to flying the pigmy first class to his second inauguration. I heard that Wike hasn’t kept up with the payment, hence Eluke basically has no value for him.

Bottom-line, Reuben Eluke is one of Nigeria’s plagues; his words are hollow and valueless.

Steven Kueberuwa is a man of low self esteem and of heightened pettiness, that is why he is ashamed of being 81 years old. Most of us wish to get to 80 years old or more because we recognize old age as a blessing. My father is 95 years old, his younger brother is 93, and their four sisters are all alive, the youngest being 73 years old. To mature people, old age, with good health (as with my father and his siblings) is a blessing and what reasonable people look forward to. Steven Kueberuwa should grow up and accept his old age of 81 years; it is a blessing if he respects it and is in good health. 

Imperial Wizard seems like a scholar, so I am not surprised that he knows as much as he reveals. It is because I trusted his scholarship ability that I was angry at him for abandoning it to joining you dishonest Kueberuwa in asserting the idiocy that Nebukadineze was Emeka Duruigbo of Texas or wherever he resides.

Recall that until Bayelsa State was created out of the old Rivers State by Gen Abacha, the two states were operated as one Rivers State. Only the Ijaws in the riverine areas of Sagbama, et al knew and understood the terrain of their landmass at the time and, they (Ijaws) only supervised elections in their area. I personally did not go there - not even for a moment. It was a huge surprise that the bulk of the votes that came in from that area some days after counting had been concluded and results released in other parts of the State were not only overwhelmingly in favour of Melford Okilo, but far over and above the entire population of the present day Bayelsa. So, how did Melford Okilo defeat Barr Wobidike Wonodi? Simple. Huge inflated figures in favour of Melford Okilo who trailed his opponent in virtually all other parts of the State. But that's now history.

That was why we, working with Abacha, carved them out of Rivers state but only for sellouts like you to replace them. For some bizarre reason, Melford Okilo was a stooge of Ahmadu Bello's NPC from the late 1960s -- he always won elections in that part of his Ijọ through a small political party allied to NPC. Ironically, he saw the light after it was too late. From 1999 until his death, all he did was lash out against Northern and Yoruba exploitation of his people; he steadily cursed out Obasanjo while he was President. Like Adaka Boro, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and George Kurubo, Okilo died regretting having helped the North and the West exploit the mineral resources of former Eastern Region; he regretted having worked against NCNC and Biafra. I hope that you, Reuben Eluke, woke up before it is too late.

Have you ever heard of Ebitu Ukiwe who resigned from being the VP of Nigeria (Chief of General Staff) because his President and a clique in the ruling council were relegating the South and Christians by joining the Organization of Islamic Conference without consulting them?

I commend Awo for resigning before he was thrown out (that was the next move by Gowon and gang after the war) but that shouldn't absolve him from the blame of having joined them in the first place. The best Awo could have done for Nigerians in 1967 was insist on preserving the Regions through upholding the Aburi Accord. He opportunistically thought that he would outsmart Gowon and gang, who were in high school when he was Premier of Western Nigeria, at the end of the war. By 1983, he regretted having joined to save Nigeria from disintegration in 1967 -- he said that if he knew that Nigeria would become what it became by 1983, he would have made a different choice in 1967. The truth is that Awo was capable of foreseeing what Nigeria eventually became, he just ignored seeing it for opportunistic reasons, that's the only thing I held against him, which you worshippers o him simplistically excuse.
