Once again I suggest we forget politics, ignore our ego and hire mercenaries to fight these terrorists. Kano had become safe for quite some time and now this.

Bro Abba, my planned trip to Kano postponed indefinitely

I hope my investment in a Kano electrical business is safe. The Emir and Buhari should call Boko Haram off. Their mission has been accomplished.

My brother Joe,

I disagree, we should be able to defeat this criminal outfit. The government has concentrated on military measures alone. The Federal Government should put a ban on all publicity on the activities of these hoodlums - print, television, radio – they must be denied the oxygen of publicity. As General Ishola Williams have long suggested, Nigeria should invest heavily in intelligence capable of operating within and in neighbouring countries to infiltrate the group and begin dismantling them from within. A cracked team of female soldiers is necessary to flush out these nonentities who believe they may not make heaven, if killed by women. If mercenaries are to be used, then there is a real case for dismantling and rebuilding the Nigerian Army. The Army should have pride in themselves to sit down and prosecute this war to its logical conclusion.

Joe Attueyi and John Ebohon:

This suicide-induced carnage on Nigerian soil is appalling.....I still don't understand what mentality makes so many people so willing to blow themselves up....

A few points here though:

1.  Mercenaries cannot be used to defeat the kind of religious insurgency that the world is now facing.  It will just be a waste of money.

2.  Suicidal insurgency cannot be completely wiped out....but it can be severely curtailed.  We will have to live with it for a long time, and be happy when they are few and far between in occurrence.

3.  The first lines of defence are HUMAN INTELLIGENCE (Humint) and TECHNOLOGICAL INTELLIGENCE (TechInt).  The former is aided by capturing as many insurgents alive as possible (and subjecting them to serious interrogation) and the latter can be improved through purchase of aerial-survey SATELITTE information from local and foreign sources - to the greatest resolution possible, no matter how much it costs, particularly soon after the insurgents have struck massively somewhere, because they cannot but have left a "paper-trail."

4.  We must cut off fuel, arms, transportation, food and recruits supply routes to the insurgents.  After all, the first four items do not just drop off from the sky, and a lot of them are needed for logistics for such large number of insurgents.  I have never understood how transportation was arranged to transport 200+ girls from Chibok to anywhere else, without notice....how many Hiluxes, or lorries, or buses were used?  They did not raise noise or dust along the way?.....Incredible...

5.  It is in LIMITING the number of new recruits that the socio-economic factors that feed the insurgency in the first instance must be addressed.

6.  An OFFENSIVE posture must be adopted by the military - not just sit back and be hit by the insurgents, but go further and farther against them wherever they are suspected to be, even if they hide in caves or tunnels or thick forests.  It should be a day and night search-and-destroy posture. [The PMB administration is doing well in this arena.]

7.  For our Muslims brothers and sisters, their religious leaders must be more forthcoming in pronouncing FATWAS against suicide for whatever reason,  that it is UN-ISLAMIC, and that any Muslim that does it goes straight to Hell, where there are no genders.  We should plead that ALL ambiguity about going to a pleasurable sex-satisfying heaven upon committing suicide must be removed.  This move, among others (like limited banning of the Hijab in the most vulnerable locations) should be adopted quickly.

8.  Finally,  provide morale-boosting information about the War effort - because this is war -  to the public, especially verifiable pictures...no lies or useless propaganda, please.

And there you have it.

Does anyone know what Boko Haram wants? I forgot. I thought they wanted a northerner elected president. That was done. What else? Sharia? People fight for a purpose. Can someone educate me what Boko Haram achieve after the suicide bombings? I am lost.

The agitators for Biafra are understood. But no one seems to understand Boko Haram. While you have fuel scarcity, Boko Haram has fuel to drive around. They have cell phones serviced by MTN. Something is puzzling about Boko Haram. The northern governors have not yet issued a communique on Boko Haram. But southern governors are quick to hold emergency meetings on agitations for Biafra.

Bro John,
I agree we should be able to defeat BH but we have not.
Meanwhile innocent Nigerians are being killed daily--even in areas like hitherto considered relatively secured.

In the short term we should use EVERY thing possible including hiring (female?) mercenaries.

We can concurrently by reorganizing our army.

Prof.,
Interesting take. Some questions and comments:

1.  Mercenaries cannot be used to defeat the kind of religious insurgency that the world is now facing.  It will just be a waste of money.

But can mercenaries help curtail , not defeat , BH? It seems our army is either ill trained or ill motivated ( or both ) to do their job. Can a paid mercenary army do , in the interim, what our soldiers are supposed to be doing while as John recommended we reorganize our army?

The first lines of defence are HUMAN INTELLIGENCE (Humint) and TECHNOLOGICAL INTELLIGENCE (TechInt).  The former is aided by capturing as many insurgents alive as possible (and subjecting them to serious interrogation)

I think the first line of human intelligence is the local community (ies). These Boko boys are not spirits. They have parents, siblings, friends etc. they eat, they play , buy and sell. Among the captured and dead there has been no reported influx of foreigners as BH operatives. They are largely local

I have never understood how transportation was arranged to transport 200+ girls from Chibok to anywhere else, without notice....how many Hiluxes, or lorries, or buses were used?  They did not raise noise or dust along the way?.....Incredible...

Finally you and Ezeana Igirigi Achusim have agreement on something! This relates to my point above. Insurgency cannot thrive for long without a measure of local support.

For our Muslims brothers and sisters, their religious leaders must be more forthcoming in pronouncing FATWAS against suicide for whatever reason,  that it is UN-ISLAMIC, and that any Muslim that does it goes straight to Hell, where there are no genders.  We should plead that ALL ambiguity about going to a pleasurable sex-satisfying heaven upon committing suicide must be removed

Touché. My friends from the NE don't like hearing it but I keep saying to them that if the religious and political leaders of the North can mobilize against BH the way they mobilized against Jonathan the activities of BH will be curtailed if not stopped. There is a video circulating online where a so called Imam is teaching that a suicide bomber killing innocent people in the name of Islam will go straight to paradise where he will get to sleep with 100 virgins every morning! In an age where young impressionable and idle youths have access to Facebook on their phones much more needs to be done , as you outlined above, religious and even political leaders in the North

Subject: Re: [Raayiriga] Re: [NIgerianWorldForum] Update: 11 killed 66 injured as suicide bombers hit Kano GSM market

Bro. Joe the Pastor,

C'mon, Bro., I expect better.  We must not let the thugs win by changing our plans.
I actually just returned from an extended trip that saw me in Paris three days after the horrific
attacks of last Friday....and I went and had coffee in my favorite Café, alongside other Parisians (great to see
Parisians trying to return to normal, after such a terrible terror attack).

So, I say onto you, fah, fah, fah FOUL.  We cannot succumb to agents of terror.  We are bigger and better....
and we must not let them succeed in actually terrorizing us (by having us change our way of doing things or even our way of life).

Having said all the above, we must also try to fix Nigeria....so that our millions of unemployed youth have a future to look up to (and, by so doing, minimize the chance of having them be lured into such horrific activities).  We sympathize with the families of all those who lost their loved ones due to this act of terrorism on innocent/defenceless people.  May we all see an end to this madness very soon....we all have to do whatever it takes to bring this to a crushing/decisive end.  The current government has done a little more than the one before it, but this is no time for complacency.  We must do a lot more than we are currently doing.  Enough of this bloodshed.  May peace begin to reign in Nigeria and the rest of the world.

VC's observations, especially the excerpted quotes above call for additional observations and commentaries. And these are JUI's:

1. There is a radical difference IN EXPECTED OUTCOME when a bona fide nation is confronting an internal insurgency or terror group within the territorial integrity of the nation, and when a nation is facing the hit-and-run operation of an externally-based terror group that the nation cannot pursue freely.

2. Apparently, Bornu, Yobe, Plateau, Bauchi, Adamawa and other Boko Haram-infested States are still governed and policed by Nigerian leaders/officials in the traditional authorities, military defense forces, the Police, Govs, State/Fed legislators, State and Fed Cabinet members etc, that pledge or owe allegiance to the nation. Civil war aside [in which the traditional, State and/or Regional leaderships are involved in the insurrection or secession], there is no SERIOUS country that has focused her fed and states' defense/military infrastructures on a terror group that has not prevailed ultimately! Perhaps this is the MOST DISAPPOINTING aspect of the Nigerian Govt's effort to control Boko Haram's nuisance. The country has not been told why the traditional authorities, Local, State and Federal Govts have not been able to join ranks on the intelligence and military offensive to identify Boko Haram supporters and fighters, and solve this problem for good! Moreover, is there a reason why the traditional authorities, local and State Govts operating in or in-charged of the Boko Haram-infested areas still receive federal allocations when governance has not been effective in the region for so long? Or are some leaders in these regional Govts the promoters of Boko Haram? The TRUTH will emerge ONE DAY!

3. It's refreshing to realize that JUI is not the only one miffed by the incessant misleading information and false news often disseminated by the Nigerian military on the progress being made in the war against Boko Haram, a ragtag band of sectarians that has not benefitted from the extensive military training of the armed and Police forces. They should shove it because it's not just an embarrassment, it's ANNOYING!

Take care. JUI
