Just like you only get to be 16 once, World Cup teams also attain group 16 once. Thereafter, a team either knocks out an opposing team or gets knocked out. That knockout stage begins today with Brazil, Chile, etc taking the field.

With Ghana, Spain, Iran, Croatia, awful Cameroon, mistake prone Ivory Coast, etc all taking or have taken the early flight home, here are the predicted teams to reach the Quarterfinals:

1.   Brazil  Vs Chile
Brazil has chilled Chile multiple times in the past. Today the Brazilians will again deep freeze Chile in Thermocool refrigerator. Pick: Brazil

2.   Colombia   Vs   Uruguay
Ouch, Luis Suarez took out his Uruguay team in a very biting manner! Pick: Colombia.

3.     Netherlands   Vs    Mexico
A lot of people, including a Very Confused Professor turned Sports pundit in the Niger Delta of Nigeria,  have already crowned the Netherlands among the 2014 Knockout stage winners. Those folks better take Doan's pills for a sure to come upset stomach after this game. Pick: Mexico.

4.       Costa Rica   Vs    Greece
Heck, I always liked Phidipides the Greek runner. Today, his countrymen will "win one for the Gipper." Pick: Greece.

5.      France    Vs      Nigeria
It is truly better to be lucky than to be good. May be Jonathan should reward the Referee in that Nigeria-Bosnia-Hez game with an oil block.
Pick: France

6.       Germany    Vs     Algeria
These Germans will likely score 2 goals in the first half, in time to put in Miraslov Klose to get his 16th WC goal to stay in front of Ronaldo as the scoring champion. Pick: Germany.

7.   Argentina    Vs    Switzerland
After the Argentina-Nigeria game, Lionel Messi's grandfather chastised his grandson for playing soft. Well, Messi will work to make the old man happy with this one and also prove that Argentine girls are sweeter than Swiss girls. Otitigbe, I love cha cha! Pick: Argentina.

8.       Belgium     Vs      USA
Leopold might roll over in his grave today. Pick: USA

Collins:

Good luck with your picks. But for the life of me, I don't understand why you pick Greek over Costa Rica. Netherlands and Mexico is dicey. It can go either way. There is no clear cut favorite. Also with France and Nigeria,  expect another shocker as the Super Eagles may be sending France home. Just like Netherlands and Mexico is dicey, the USA and Belgium is also dicey. Either team has a chance.  It is not clear cut as you think.

Am fine with your other picks.

Collins,
Did you copy this analysis from somewhere or it is yours?

If yours, what exactly did the referee in the Bosnia match do to favour Nigeria? Even with replays folks are still arguing whether or not Dzeko was offside--talk less of a ref taking an immediate decision?

And why do you think it is luck that has brought Nigeria thus far?

Topcrest:

The picks are mine and mine alone --not yours (obviously), not Bolaji's, not Aduba's, Not ESPN's, not whatever's. Thats a fact you can take to the bank, or you are welcome to do your research. You are riled because I have told you the truth about what to expect in our game with France. France has a better squad and that's why I am picking that nation over my beloved Super Eagles.

As a true sports fan you should call it the way you see it --with your instincts playing a major role in your calls. I am a die hard fan of the Super Eagles, but I must be candid to say that they escaped both Iran and Bosnia-Hez. Most of that game with Iran in particular was played in Iran's half of the field, yet no goals were scored. One goal from Iran would have got us back in Abuja by now. Although if Peter Odemwingie had started in that game, the Eagles would have exploited his interior mechanics and likely scored. But Keshi, for reasons I don't know, kept the guy out till it was too late to use him to optimum level. As for the game with Bos-Hez., I think opinions will continue to be polarized, but the moment Bosnia-Hez. lost that call and Emenike connected with Musa and we were up 1-0, Bosnia-Hez. began playing as if the heavens were against them. Tha t cost them the game. We are lucky that FIFA is not using NFL's type of Instant Replay Review under the booth, otherwise the Eagles will be home now.

Our most competitive game was the one against Argentina. Had Enyeama, though among the best goalkeepers on planet earth, focused his attention on that ball and Leo Messi during the free kick, I think it would have been a draw. He should have known better though, given that Maradona of the same Argentina also once defeated us by our lack of attention during free kicks. That is one thing the Super Eagles must work on before another team pulls that stunt to run us over again. By the way, in that last game with Argentina I picked Nigeria to win, but I came up short.

Collins.

Mazi Gregg,

We Africans have come a long way in these World Cup series and we can only hope to do better in the future. My regret in this current WC is that the best African team, thats Ghana, lost in a very early round. Otherwise Ghana would have carried Africa on her shoulders again.

But in Nigeria's game with France, if it comes down to penalty kicks, Nigeria will have upper hand because of Enyeama and his goalkeeping prowess. I'm sure the French know that already and will try to avoid that scenario.

Yep, Collins, your picks are reasonable, but I’m thinking that Uruguay might be a little more determined without Mini Dracula Suarez.  I’m looking forward to Brazil v. Chile in a few minutes.  It will be a fire cracker.   France and Nigeria tomorrow, they should send someone home for a high-powered otmorkpor.  I heard that there is a type of otmorkpor that multiplies the ball as it flies towards the goalie.  So, the goalie won’t know which one of the 5 balls is the real ball.   The thing is the otmorkpor can’t be taken across a body of water.   I’m sure one or two Dibia’s between Amaraku and Orji can cook up something for seven ninety nine.

My People:

For the knock-out Round of Sixteen in this World Cup 2014, I have already made my predictions, viz:

1.  Brazil plays Chile...................Saturday, June 28, 5 pm......VC Aluko prediction: Brazil wins
2.  Colombia plays Uruguay.......Saturday, June 28, 9 pm.....VC Aluko prediction: Colombia wins
3,  Netherland plays Mexico.......Sunday, June 29, 5 pm.......VC Aluko prediction: Netherland wins <==========
4.  Costa Rica plays Greece......Sunday, June 29, 9 pm.........VC Aluko prediction: Greece wins
5.  France plays Nigeria..............Monday, June 30, 5 pm.....VC Aluko prediction:  Nigeria wins <============
6.  Germany plays Algeria...........Monday, June 30, 9 pm.....VC Aluko prediction: Germany wins
7.  Argentina plays Switzerland..Tuesday, July 1, 5 pm.........VC Aluko prediction: Argentina wins
8.  Belgium plays USA.................Tuesday, July 1, 9 pm .......VC Aluko prediction:  USA wins

But to my surprise, what do we now have from Collins Ezebuihe?

1.   Brazil  Vs Chile.........................Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Brazil
2.   Colombia   Vs   Uruguay.........Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Colombia.
3.   Netherlands   Vs    Mexico.......Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Mexico. <==============
4.   Costa Rica   Vs    Greece..........Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Greece.
5.   France    Vs      Nigeria.............Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: France <===============
6.   Germany    Vs     Algeria..........Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Germany.
7.   Argentina    Vs    Switzerland...Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Argentina.
8.  Belgium     Vs      USA...............Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: USA

It is only a crazy fellow that will predict Netherlands over Mexico, or some other country over his own....unless of course he has disowned his own country, which is not impossible, the way he writes.

And there you have it.....we should soon start to see, as I head off to begin to watch the Brazil -  Mexico, where we hope there is no upset o!

The real "bike trick" for Iyiola to become Governor is to do what the Feds did in Ekiti. Lock out the opposition; bring Musiliu Obanikoro and other henchment in; use soldiers to restrict movement of the opposition and do your thing . . . and ... bam! make Iyiola win! In Nigeria it is the "bike trick" not the "hat trick".

Kool Breeze:

Sure, you are right about the dicey picks you indicated. But when you have some of the best teams in the world competing, it becomes an uphill task picking a winner, and thats why sports pundits sometimes (like now) operate at the edge of the cliff.

We know that Greece and Costa Rica are both good, but I picked Greece over Costa Rica because Greece is sort of employing Mohammed Ali's ropa-dope style. They'll hunker down, defend, defend and strike when Costa Rica has punched itself out and creates a vulnerable opening.

In the case of the USA versus Beligium, I picked the US for 4 reasons:
First, a team that beat Ghana is a very good team, but only underrated...
Secondly, a team that only lost to Germany by one goal is equally good...
Thirdly, some of the guys in the US squad started soccer in Europe, and they know what Europeans know about soccer...
Fourth, these US players know that if they go beyond this round of 16, then Soccer in America will really start paying big like NFL, Baseball, and Basketball. They are gunning for money, and that is when Americans bring out their best effort.

Finally, the case of Mexico and Netherlands is the one I really had problem with...until I considered some factors: Mexico tied with Brazil, but Netherlands won't beat Brazil. Mexico also played in a tougher division and cruised past Croatia and Cameroon, while Netherlands' only true competition was Chile (forget Spain and Australia as tough teams). Mexicans are really playing like they don't want to play a second fiddle to anyone, and you know what that kind of swagger will do for any team.

I hope Pastor Joe is reading this. Now lets watch Brazil struggle first, but eventually chill Chile.

Collins.

Well, Bolaji, you are the crazy one because you are the one that chose Netherlands, not me. As for my choice of France, I did that purely on the merits of the case, though I want Nigeria to have another good luck.

Costa Rica will beat Greece. You guys can take that to the bank. (Otuonye).

Quite possible.

Brazil might defeat themselves against Chile. Brazil is not as convincing as I thought they would be in this game.  I may be wrong but that’s how it looks to me at this point. That would be something if Chile wins.

Brazil Vs. Chile...................Brazil

Switzerland Vs. Argentina....Switzerland.
Argentina has not really impressed me. Yes Messi has done good but the team is just average. The Swiss have a formidable attack that will trouble the Argies back line.

France Vs. Nigeria.................France unless an all out attacking match with Nigeria winning 3-2 or 4-3. Anything less than a total of 3 goals scored and France wins.

U.S.A. Vs. Belgium...............Belgium once big boys step up. If they continue to play as group stage, USA will win 2-1 or 1-0.

Nertherlands Vs. Mexico...... Mexico will win. The massive support will see them through.

Costa Rica Vs. Greece..........Costa Rica will win 2-0 or 3-1. Only way Greece can win is if they score first then pack the bus.

Uruguay Vs. Colombia......... Colombia will win that match.

Germany Vs. Algeria........I think Algeria can win this match if they apply same formation as the Korea and Russia matches. Germans play with four center backs. Laim, a natural full back is deployed further up the field. I do not think the Germans can handle the Algerians aggressive frontal attack. Expect up to 5 goals or more scored in this match. It can go either way but this is my second upset match up along with the Swiss over Argentina.

RESULTBrazil won as I predicted.

2.   Colombia   Vs   Uruguay
Ouch, Luis Suarez took out his Uruguay team in a very biting manner! Pick: Colombia.
RESULT: Colombia won as I predicted.

RESULT: Netherlands won, contrary to my prediction.

Most of us --Kool Breeze, Sir Deno VC Bolaji, Gregg, Topcrestt, Yourself, and myself-- have our picks. So, why don't we past all of them on one page and see how things shake out at the end of this knockout stage? That will be in line with what Ihediwa suggested.

1.   Brazil  Vs Chile
Brazil has chilled Chile multiple times in the past. Today the Brazilians will again deep freeze Chile in Thermocool refrigerator. Pick: Brazil

RESULTBrazil won as I predicted.

2.   Colombia   Vs   Uruguay
Ouch, Luis Suarez took out his Uruguay team in a very biting manner! Pick: Colombia.

RESULT: Netherlands won, contrary to my prediction.

Many of the outcomes from these soccer matches are very obvious. Thus, the predictions are much easier. Don't you think so?

Mazi Zubbie:

I will say that the teams with established winning tradition tend to get the nod to go deep into the competition. However, Spain got that nod, but we now know that the Spaniard Armada has already set sail...back to Madrid and in desrepair...thanks to the Netherlands and Chile who dumped about 7 goals on Spain. Thereupon, the outcome of these games cannot be ruled "predictable". Especially as more elite teams advance to engage each other.

I'm sure you listened to/watched both Mexico and Chile nearly send Netherlands (the Dutch) back to Amsterdam, and nearly made Brizilians just WC spectators. Thats how evenly matched these teams are, and how dicey the predictions can be. Eventually, anyone who picked Chile over Brazil or Mexico over Netherlands can now rest assured that the soccer community can now understand why he or she chose Chile and/or Mexico to steam on.

Just about the clearly predictable game, without too much assessment or analyses of the strengths and weaknesses of the teams, is the game between Argentina and Nigeria. That is because the Super Eagles don't have anyone whose talent is even remotely close to what Lionel Messi brings to the table. That is a world of difference.

Any Nigerian or African is free to choose Nigeria over Argentina because of national or continental pride, but if you are a sports pundit anywhere, picking Nigeria over Argentina will be irresponsible and a clear cheating of international soccer.
And having said that, I will confess to you that I want Nigeria to win...that's my contribution to national pride...but Nigeria only matches or even surpasses Argentina in terms of goalkeeping. I believe we have a better goalkeeper, but is not his sole duty to keep out Messi and his crew from the 18' box.

Cheers,

Collins Ezebuihe

1.  The game is still wide open between myself and Otuonye; it hangs on the match between Belgium and USA

2.  If Nigeria beats France today, Ezebuihe is out of the race with me; I will come out ahead of him since the rest of our predictions are identical. In fact, he might be entirely out of the race at that point - or already!

3,  No matter what happens in the remaining matches, Aduba will come out ahead of Deno Lee; their predictions are identical.

4,  The price of winning is a trip to the next World Cup in Russia, courtesy the LAST of the predicters! :-)

The problems with Vin's score card is that he chose Nigeria over France, and Belgium over the US. Projected Finish: 6/8

The problems with Aduba's score card is that he chose Algeria over Germany, and Belgium over the US. Projected Finish: 6/8

Aluko's problems with his score card are his choices of Greece and Nigeria as winners. Projected Finish: 6/8.

With the choices of Mexico and Greece, my score card has already taken its last bruises. Projected Finish: 6/8.

Sir Deno's problems with his card are his choices of Mexico,  Belgium, and Algeria. Projected Finish: 5/8.

NOTE: Winning this friendly competition hinges on 3 games: The US/Belgium game; Germany/Algeria game, and France/Nigeria game.

If Belgium and Algeria win, Sir Deno Lee might win the competition or secure a 3-way tie for first place with Vin, and Aduba.

Between Aluko and Ezebuihe, it comes down to the France/Nigeria game. Both men could finish 6/8.

Cheers all,

Collins

Apparently, Collins Ezebuihe believes he has lost the World Cup winners' prediction competition.  So he is now diverting us to the Predictors' Prediction Competition - maybe he can win that one?

fair point but make you praise the boys. They are taking the game to the French —contrary to what Collins and his friends at BBC thought will happen!

Game on. Anybody’s game.

An heart breaking loss it was but we must still congratulate each and every member
of the Super Eagles and Coach Stepen Keshie nonetheless!

Our guys played very well.

We had more of the possession in the first half.

Either team could have won!

The race is a dead heat, but the Belgium/USA game decides the winners! I say winners because: of all 5 pundits duking it out, 3 of them chose Belgium as the winner, while 2 other pundits favor the US winning.

But whatever happens, all the pundits have winning percentages.

If Belgium wins, Vin wins the competition with 7/8; Deno and Aduba take 2nd place with 6/8; while Aluko and Ezebuihe take 3rd place finish with 5/8.

But if Tim Howard saves the US to victory, Aluko and Ezebuihe tie with Vin at 6/8 for first place, while Aduba and Deno tie for 2nd place.

No matter how the game ends, Vin is guaranteed a first place finish.
