What is jazz poetry? Jazz poetry has a jazz-like rhythm and syncopation to the words. Since African Americans were influential in the development of jazz music in the 1920s, many black poets incorporated the musical beat into their lines of poetry. Langston Hughes was one of these poets. Born on February 1, 1902, Hughes was a devotee of blues and jazz and a major voice of the Harlem renaissance. He wrote musicals, operas, novels, children’s stories and three autobiographies. Hughes worked to publicize the efforts of other African American authors and musicians and to further the status of people with African heritage in America. In his poem, “I, Too,” he wrote, “I, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen when company comes. But I laugh, eat well, And grow strong.” The whole month of February is aNational dedication and observation of African American history in America, mostly done by highlighting the accomplishments of its African-American citizens. African Americans culture has inspired and continues to inspire the nation, the African worlds, and clearly the rest of the world. African American experience, efforts and achievements have paved the way for many ethnic groups, immigrants, minority, women, and all African people worldwide. African Americans’ role in world developments and in strengthening America making us all more powerful, culturally attractive, civilized nation and encouraging public policies that have come to make the US a safer place for everyone — deserves the honor bestowed. African Views organization has dedicated its culture dialogues program for the whole of February to celebrate the beauty of the diverse elements of African heritage in African American culture, and its contribution to the American society and of course the entire active world.
