I met a Peace Corps person today who said that she like the definition of development as 'countries solving their own problems'.
But is Ghana ready to solve its own problems without help from outside Africa?
I believe the key for progression in Ghana is the education system but it's not allowing students to think or question. Foreigners are working with the government to help reform the education system but they don't believe it can really change. Can Ghana change it's own system or is it happy with it the way it is?
Missionaries are coming to Ghana not to preach but to teach churches how to manage money. Can Ghanaians teach themselves money management?
Chinese and other countries are building roads and other infrastructural projects in Ghana. Why have Ghanaians not already developed their own construction or is this a solution?
Foreign companies mine Ghana's gold and will also be mining it's oil. It's this a valid form of problem solving? Is it the recognition that Ghana is unable to do the mining and therefore hires foreigners to do it for it for a small commission?
Parts of Ghana are increasingly becoming big urban centres which are traditionally non-African. Should Ghana, therefore, be getting advice from countries which have already created these urban centres?
These are issues that I constantly grapple with and sometimes I'm optimistic and sometimes pessimistic. I would love to hear what other people think.
