Got a printed flyer from Maliti the other day about a system called
Digital Wildlife Survey from an organization called Conservation Air
Patrol. it uses a laser range finder, digital video, and feeds from
GPS and aircraft intercom.

Anybody had a play with it?

Hi all -

Had a demonstration from them a couple of months ago - it's a pretty interesting system, with georeferenced audio, video and still data. Basically it's an enhancement of any current observer-based survey system, giving higher resolution locations and more visual data for each data point (still reliant on observer clicking a button for each sighting), allowing one to go back and count herd sizes and get other data.

I think Peter Ragg's on this list - one of the driving forces behind Conservation Air ...

We discussed the need for calibration between the older SRF systems and this one, and the need to do some ground truthing before it's likely to be accepted by the various levels of bureaucracy in monitoring and management institutions, but it looks really interesting.
