While inexpensive civilian UAVs are increasing endurance and payload capacities, it seems like increasing regulation is going to make it tough to use them in a lot of cases.

Tanzania:
  • The TCAA has new draft regulations available on its website. (Link to PDF)
    • Defines classes of UAS by total (inclusive payload) weight (<5kg, 5-25, >25kg);
    • Categories: A - recreational/sport, B - private; C - commercial.
    • Licenses and operation only available to nationals, residents, companies and national organisations - apparently no allowance for tourists / visitors to use them.
    • Registration of all aircraft.
    • No operation within 10 n.m. of aerodrome without permission, and no flights > 400' AGL without permission.
    • Lots of regulations about commercial operations, seemingly identical to a general aviation commercial operation (including medical certificates for operators, complete operations manuals, etc).
  • Previously the only official notice was a ban on UAVs in or over National Parks
What regulations are in place where you work?

Another resource on UAV law: http://uavcoach.com/drone-laws/

As of writing, this has a list of links about regulations by country - with active links to Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Egypt. Unclear how often this gets updated - apparently Rwanda has regulations as well, but there's no link.

Dear Howard,
I hope this email finds you well. I am interested in attending a short course on aerial wildlife count in southern or east Africa. Are you aware of any course that will be offered in the next few months that you can suggest?
Best wishes
Valerio, from Mozambique
