For any of you who had difficulty in opening the docx format, here is the flyer attached in a couple of different formats. I am still hoping we can attend as a group.

Hi Sally,
I was able to convert it into a PDF from
the word.docx, and then for Mailchimp convert it from the PDF into a JPEG. We can send you the conversion once the changes are made.

Thanks,

I'm not sure which is wrong, but it's got to be either WEDNESDAY, May 30th or THURSDAY, May 31st....there is no Thursday, May 30th.
Please change and send it to me, and I'll put it in mailchimp this week.
Thanks, Sarah

This looks great. I suggest tightening up the prose a bit; see the attached version as a suggestion. Also, if you're looking for more cuts, you should feel free to remove my entire bio paragraph (it can be said at the beginning of the event).
Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Hi Cathy - could you help create this into a beautiful flyer for us, after we've finalized the edits (say on Monday next week?)
Thanks everyone!

Also, Erica, I hope it's okay I added in a picture I found. I saw it and thought, "Dude--now I can totally invite my friends, because the speaker looks seriously bada**." :) If you'd prefer a different pic, I get it, but it's a starting place. :)
It's
still too much info, but it's a starting place. How do we tweak it from here?
GREAT info, Laurie!
GREAT suggestions, Kristi!

I am running out the door, so my very quick take on this is: Let's have an oakland link right up in the title. Something like: Why Non Violence works - Applications from Abroad and from Oakland (needs finessing) /// Why Non Violence works From Cairo to Oakland ? /// [what are the countries Erica draws from?]] And I would suggest fewer
topics.....let's hone a little. Kristi

Why Non Violence works: Presentation by Erica Chenoweth, PhD Skyline Community Church, Thursday, May 30th 7pm 9 pm
Jointly sponsored by OCO and IFWJ
Skyline community church
Topics:
1. What are the strategic costs and consequences of civil resistance methods?
2. What have other campaigns found effective in past struggles? What is applicable to organizing in Oakland?
3. Are nonviolent resistance methods or violent resistance methods more effective in achieving strategic goals? How do we define violence?
4. Under what conditions do certain tactics work and why? How do we identify and promote those conditions?
5. How do we appropriate the wisdom of liberation stories from world religions to mobilize people?
6. How have the tactical evolutions of nonviolent and violent insurgencies affected their strategic outcomes?
7. How do non-state actors best combat police violence?
Dr. Erica Chenoweth will discuss her recent research on the dynamics of civil resistance. Based on her global data set of armed and unarmed resistance campaigns from 1900 to 2006, and drawing upon both statistical findings as well as case studies from conflicts around the world, Dr. Chenoweth will explore the reasons resistance campaigns succeed and fail.
Her discussion will then be followed by updates on local efforts through Oakland Community Organizing and EBASE.
