Here are some interesting facts on the Lohana roots of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan. He was a grandson of Premjibhai Thakkar (Gondal), a Lohana, who, to support his family, entered into the trading of fish in the coastal town of Veraval. His business, however, clashed with the strong (vegetarian) moral ethics of the Lohanas and as a result he was ostracised from the community. He made enough money in this trade and attempted to re-join the community. He also discontinued the fishing business. However, the Lohana leaders did not accept his request to rejoin the community. Think about the course of history, if they had not had inflated egos and had allowed him  to come back!

Premjibhai's son Punjalal Thakkar (Jinnah's father) was enraged at his father's humiliation and reacted like any other Lohana - with equal and opposite force. He adopted Islam and changed the names of all his four sons. However, he continued to use his Gujarati nickname: Zino (pronounced Jinno in old fashioned Gujarati) which means 'skinny.' Jinno`s son -Mohammad Ali - changed his family name to Jinnah - the nickname of his converted father.

Jinnah's first marriage in 1892 was the result of his mother urging him to marry his cousin Emibai before he left for England to pursue higher
studies. However, Emibai died a few months later. His second marriage took place in 1918 to Rattanbai Petit, a Parsi lady who was 24 years his junior.
Rattanbai converted to Islam when she married Jinnah and took on the name Maryam Jinnah. In 1919, she gave birth to their only daughter, Dina Wadia.

Dina was born to Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Maryam Jinnah in London in 1919 -shortly after midnight on August 15, 1919. As Stanley Wolpert's "Jinnah of Pakistan" records: "Oddly enough, precisely twenty-eight years to the day and hour before the birth of Jinnah's other offspring, Pakistan."

Dina had a rift with her father when she expressed her desire to marry a Parsi-born Indian, Neville Wadia. According to M C Chagla in "Roses in December", Jinnah, a Muslim, disowned his daughter after trying to dissuade her from marrying Neville. Dina Wadia is the only direct living link to
Jinnah and the nation of Pakistan which claims her father as ‘Father of the Nation’. Dina's descendants, including her son Nusli Wadia, who runs Bombay
Dyeing, are part of the Wadia family and reside in India as she married and stayed in India after the partition of India.

So, here is the fact. Gandhiji, who spearheded the movement for independent India, is aptly regarded as ‘Father of India’. Gandhi and Jinnah (father of
Pakistan), are both sons of Saurashtra, (old Kathiavad) Gujarat.

Gujaratis dominate totally Pakistan’s capital market Why is Pakistan such a mess? Some would blame Islam, but they’d be wrong. The problem isn’t religion at all. The problem is lack of caste balance. There aren’t enough traders to press for restraint and there are too many peasants. Too many people concerned about national honour, and not enough people concerned about national economy. Put simply: Pakistan has too many Punjabis and not enough Gujaratis. The majority of Pakistanis live in Punjab, but well over 50% of government revenue comes from just one city in Sindh: Karachi. Why? That is where the Gujarati is.   Gujaratis are less than 1% of Pakistan’s population, but they dominate its economy because they are from trading communities. Colgate-Palmolive in Pakistan is run by the Lakhani Memons, the Dawood group is run by Memons from Bantva in Saurashtra (the great Abdus Sattar Edhi is also a Memon from Bantva). The Adamjee group, advertisers on BBC, are from Gujarat’s Jetpur village and founded Muslim Commercial Bank. The Khoja businessman Sadruddin Hashwani owns hotels including Islamabad’s bombed-out Marriott. Khojas founded Habib Bank, whose boards are familiar to Indians who watched cricket on television in the 1980s. The Habibs also manufacture Toyota cars through Indus Motors. Pakistan’s only beer is made by Murree Brewery, owned by a Parsi family, the Bhandaras. Also owned by Parsis is Karachi’s Avari Hotels. People talk of the difference between Karachi and Lahore. I find that the rational view in Pakistani newspapers is put forward by letter-writers from Karachi. Often they have names like Gheewala, a Sunni Vohra name (same caste as Deoband’s rector from Surat, Ghulam Vastanvi), or Parekh, also a Surat name.   Today capital is fleeing Pakistan because of terrorism and poor governance. To convince investors things will get better, the Pakistani government has appointed as minister for investment a Gujarati, Saleem Mandviwalla. The Mandviwallas own Pakistan’s multiplexes, which now show Bollywood. The place where Gujaratis dominate totally, as they do also in India, is Pakistan’s capital market. Going through the list of members of the Karachi Stock Exchange (http://www.kse.com.pk/) this becomes clear. However, few Pakistanis will understand this because as Muslims they have little knowledge of caste. The Gujarati tries to hold up the Pakistani economy, but the peasant Punjabi (Jat) runs over his effort with his militant stupidity. Why cannot the Pakistani Punjabi also think like a trader? Simple. He’s not converted from the mercantile castes. There are some Khatris, like Najam Sethi, South Asia’s best editor, but they are frustrated because few other Pakistanis think like them. Are they an intellectual minority? Yes, but that is because they are a minority by caste. One great community of Pakistani Punjabi Khatris is called Chinioti. They are excellent at doing business but in a martial society they are the butt of jokes. I once heard Zia Mohyeddin tell a funny story about the cowardice of Chiniotis and I thought of how differently a Gujarati would look at the same story.

NEW DELHI: A report in a UK newspaper claims that India is among the top five countries most extensively monitored by the National Security Agency (NSA), a US government agency tasked with foreign surveillance.

The Guardian reported on Sunday that in March this year, the NSA recorded 6.3 billion pieces of intelligence from computer networks in India, placing it fifth on the list of most extensively monitored countries. Iran topped the list with 14 billion pieces of intelligence collected from it. Pakistan was third with 13.5 billion, Jordan was third with 12.7 billion and Egypt was fourth with 7.6 billion.

"In March 2013 the agency collected 97 billion pieces of intelligence from computer networks worldwide," reported the newspaper.

It added, "NSA has developed a powerful tool for recording and analysing where its intelligence comes from... (the paper) has acquired top-secret documents about the NSA datamining tool, called Boundless Informant, that details and even maps by country the voluminous amount of information it collects from computer and telephone networks."

The report is latest in the series of revelations that detail the top-secret surveillance and data monitoring programs run by NSA.

Earlier, reports detailed how NSA was using a programme called PRISM to access data generated by users of nine US-based technology companies. According to a few PowerPoint slides allegedly leaked by an NSA official, nine technology companies - Google, AOL, Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft, Skype, Facebook, YouTube and PalTalk - were providing the US government easy access to user data.

All companies named in the reports have denied being part of anything called PRISM. On Friday Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google CEO Larry Page categorically denied giving direct access to user data to US sleuths.

But US president Barack Obama had tacitly acknowledged NSA surveillance programmes aimed at non-US citizens. "You can't have a hundred percent security and also then have a hundred percent privacy and zero inconvenience. You know, we're going to have to make some choices as a society," he told reporters in the US.

On its report on Boundless Informant, the UK newspaper noted that the focus was on meta data instead of actual content of emails or calls. "The focus of the internal NSA tool is on counting and categorizing the records of communications, known as metadata, rather than the content of an email or instant message," it noted.

Hello Gyan and Kusum!

 The historical origins of man seem so interlinked from the nice way in which this particular item about Jinnah/Wadias/Gujjus has been recorded. We have always craved for peace from times immemorial either together or separatedly.

Reading these I was taken back into Kathiawar, Junagadh, Verawal with its fishing comunites/castes and the anecdotes I heard from the elders of my childhood days about how Gandhi, Jinnah, Sardar, and Nehru with some others were a team together doing the best they could under those circumstances. How teams break up is a matter of outside political strategies which must use the weaknesses it can create, and individual strengths that can withstand them. Understanding the present-time fall-outs of their efforts are extrapolations of wishful thinking.

Thank you Gyan for these very significant articles which can help keep the peace in a war/terror mongering world.
