G’day Guys;

A week until the National Carnival begins.  The following is to inform everyone, particularly the new players, what the awards are on presentation night and how they are determined.

You will note the emphasis on the president in the All Australian Awards.  I will be doing a count back on the number of beers offered😊

Regards

Player Registration

Everything starts with the player registration. At this stage we have 963 players registered on the 2017 carnival database. There is one state however that is sitting at 0 but I’m sure this blue will be fixed up this week.

Team Sheet

From the registrations, each player is allocated to one team and from this we will print out all the team sheets for the carnival on Friday, 450 in total. This is to save the team managers time and to make the names more legible for the umpires and admin staff.

However, for states with multiple teams in the one age group, I understand that you may not have finalised your teams by Friday. If you have, fantastic, and your team sheets will be correct. If you haven’t, you can email any changes to me (to dde...@loganfarm.com.au)  by Sunday or give them to me at the Team Managers Meeting on Sunday and we will alter and reprint the team sheets before round 1. Why this is important will be evident below.

States with multiple teams:

VC - 35/40’s, 45’s and 50’s.

QLD - 35/40’s and 45’s.

VM – 45’s, 50’s, 55’s and 60’s.

All other States/Ages are OK.

Divisional Team Winners Awards

The 2017 carnival has 11 full divisions of four or more teams and one ‘demonstration’ division of two teams. Each full division will award a Divisional Winners award to the team that wins the most number of games and, if in case of a tie, the highest for & against percentage. In a four team division, each team plays each other once and a tie is rare. In a six team division, the draw for round 3 is based on the results of the first two rounds to endeavour to get a clear winner. The players of each divisional winner are awarded their medals after the completion of their third round match (or in case of a tie as soon as the percentages are calculated). The Divisional shield is presented to each winning coach on presentation night.

The full divisions are:

·        women’s 30’s (6 teams)

·        men’s 35’s/40’s div 1 and 2

·        men’s 45’s div 1, 2 and 3

·        men’s 50’s div 1 and 2

·        men’s 55’s div 1 and 2

·        men’s 60’s div 1 (6 teams)

The demonstration division is women’s 38’s. There is no divisional award for a demonstration division.

Best & Fairest Awards

The Best & Fairest award is a 100% umpire award and goes to that player(s) that receive the highest number of umpire votes in their full division. In the case of a tie, multiple winners are awarded, there is no countback. A Best & Fairest is not awarded to a reported or red carded player regardless of the number of votes they poll.

A player can only earn umpire votes in the team they are allocated to. Any player that is handwritten on a team sheet is ineligible to receive umpire votes as it means they are allocated to another team. In previous years, players have polled votes in multiple teams and 3+ games, which is clearly unfair. This is why getting the team sheets right is important so every player has an equal opportunity to win a B&F award. The B&F medals are presented to each full divisional winner(s) on presentation night.

There is no B&F award allocated to a demonstration division. However, a best player medal is awarded after the last game to a player from the demonstration division.

This year there is a President’s team in the Over 55’s Div 2. Players will come from other 55’s and 60’s teams and will be eligible to earn umpire votes. Their votes in the President’s team will not be added to their allocated team votes but will stand alone and count toward the B&F award for 55’s Div 2. The purpose of this is to ensure we fill the 4th team in this division so that the other 3 teams play 3 games. The National President will be the arbiter in case of any dispute or skulduggery.

All Australian (AA) Awards

The AA is a state award, and not a national or umpire award. The only exception is that if a player receives 8 or more umpire votes they automatically receive an AA award.

The number of AA awards allocated to each team is based solely on their ladder position at the end of the carnival and the winners are those players that receive the highest number of votes for their team.

For the 35’s/40’s, 50’s and 55’s (2 divisions x 4 teams) the allocation is:

For the Women’s (1 division x 6 teams, 1 division x 2 teams) the allocation is:

The winning coach of division 1 is also awarded an AA medal.

Votes are collated by the team sheet on a 5 (best), 4,3,2,1 basis per team and submitted to the office as soon as possible after the match. As this is a state award and who wins it for one state has no bearing on another, it is UP TO YOU who is responsible for awarding the votes. It could be the president, coach, captain, team manager, supporter or all of the above. If you have particular criteria for your best players it is also up to you. And how transparent/communicative about this process with your players is also up to you as the responsibility and buck rests with you. At the delegates meeting on Thursday you will get the opportunity to see the first two round votes and if there are any queries or tied votes for your state, you will also be involved in any AA decisions. All we will do is ensure the allocation of votes between ladder positions is fair and transparent, and then administer the process. The method and integrity of how a team’s votes are allocated is determined by each state president.

AA medals are presented by age group on presentation night.

I look forward to catching up with everyone next week and if you have any queries on anything above please let me know. Good luck with the rest of your organising. Cheers,

Derek
