Sustainable Landscape Design Symposium
At the Center for Architecture, April 22

On Earth Day, April 22, 2008, the Design Trust
for
Public Space and the NYC Department of Parks and
Recreation will host "Park Design for the 21st
Century," a symposium on sustainable landscape
design at the Center for Architecture. Presentations
by prominent professionals and City officials will
illuminate cutting-edge techniques for the creation of
sustainable parkland.

The event celebrates the year anniversary of
PlaNYC, Mayor Michael Bloomberg's
groundbreaking sustainability plan. The Design
Trust shares the Mayor's vision for a greener, more
livable city and has worked to help map a path to
achieve PlaNYC's goals. "Park Design for the 21st
Century" will help the City
bring its 29,000 acres of parkland into the new
millennium, providing the NYC Dept. of Parks and
Recreation with a sustainable design manual to use
citywide.

New techniques and innovative designs discussed at
the symposium will inform the Design Trust's
upcoming publication High Performance
Landscape Guidelines - the third in our trilogy
of sustainable design manuals. The Design Trust's
previous publications, High Performance
Building Guidelines (1999) and High
Performance Infrastructure Guidelines (2005)
set the stage for a paradigm shift in the way New
York City is constructed. These two publications led
directly to the enactment of local laws that encourage
high performance construction, and also paved the
way for Mayor Bloomberg's recent sustainability
initiatives.

Welcome remarks will be given by Deborah Marton,
Executive Director, Design Trust for Public Space;
Laurie Kerr, Senior Policy Advisor, Mayor's Office of
Long-Term Planning and
Sustainability; and Charles McKinney, Chief of
Design, NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation.
