NEXT MEETING

The December meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the
Austin Center for Architecture at 801 W. 12th Street. The meeting
will include a brief presentation about community gardens by members
of the Windsor Park Community Garden.

AFH AUSTIN HAS A LOT GOING ON. DON'T YOU WANT TO HELP?

Remember: Volunteering with AfH is a great way to get IDP or
Continuing Education hours.

PROJECT UPDATES

1) Park benches, Dottie Jordan Park, Austin

This project to incorporate benches/seating at the tennis courts at
Dottie Jordan Park is moving along. Join the design team! We're in
the process of researching grant opportunities. Learn more and see
some photos here <http://www.openarchitecturenetwork.org/node/3328>
.

2) Atemajac Church, Atemajac, Mexico

The initial information-gathering trip to Atemajac by a small group
from AfH Austin is scheduled for March. Before that, we'll need
people to undertake precedent study and pre-design. Construction is
still planned for May/June '09.

RESEARCH YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION!

We continue to encourage everyone to find out about their
neighborhood association. When do they meet? What's the state of any
parks in your neighborhood? If they have tennis courts, are there
benches? This information would be really helpful for potentially
expanding the park benches project and taking on some other public
space projects.

PROJECT LEADER NEEDED

We need a person to head up a project for a day labor station
structure. See the details here
<http://www.publicarchitecture.org/design_campaigns/day_labor_station.htm>
. All the pieces are in place for someone to realize this project. It
would be especially helpful to have a Spanish speaker as part of this
project.

DID YOU KNOW?

In light of next meeting s visit from the Windsor Park Community
Garden folks, here are some resources on urban food issues. The
100-Mile Diet <http://100milediet.org/>
encourages people to eat only food obtained within a 100-mile
radius of where they live. Some ingredients can be
challenging-to-impossible to obtain, but it's a way to make you more
aware of your local food system. The Sustainable Food Center in
Austin operates a Farm Direct
<http://www.sustainablefoodcenter.org/FD_overview.html>
program, which gives local growers direct access to urban residents
in schools and workplaces. Texas Locavore <http://texaslocavore.com/>
is a blog by an Austin journalist with news and notes about eating
local in Texas.

Thanks for reading!
