For those of you who couldn't make it, here is a brief synopsis of
our projects and what we need right now.
Myanmar Fund Raiser
Our fund raiser to support the Architecture for Humanity re-building
effort in Myanmar is off to a good start. A team has begun filtering
ideas for the best ways to raise money. We are going to host an
event, hopefully, in mid-July. We have volunteers making phone calls
to local bars and other venues. Once we have a venue secured, we will
need a lot of help. Specific areas of work include: obtaining
sponsorship, recruiting artists or firms to contribute items for an
auction, signing bands, decorations, poster and flyer design, press
release, etc. Please let me know if you are interested in getting
involved with this.
Texas Homeless Network - Transitional Housing
We have a sizable team working on a precedent research project to
show the Texas homeless Network what their options are. During the
meeting we discussed strategies related to delivering our preliminary
research findings to THN. We decided that it was necessary to develop
a format for the case studies to ensure complete-ness within the
research, then at our next meeting find any additional holes that we
would like to fill and begin the exercise of developing some
conceptual structure for the presentation. (this was done to some
degree at a previous meeting, but will need to be revisited in
greater depth as we receive all the research information.) Specific
areas of work include: continued case study research, diagramming
exercises, additional supplementary research, compiling previous
competition and workshop examples, meeting and presenting the first
stage of development to THN.
Biloxi Trip and Shade Structure Design
Biloxi, MS has been continually working to re-build since Hurricane
Katrina. AfH Austin is working with AfH Biloxi to send a group to
Biloxi for a few days of hands-on construction work. This is trip is
tentatively planned for some time this summer. There has been some
question over whether participants will pay their own way or raise
money to pay for the trip. This is up for discussion. If you are
interested in the trip, please contact Jason Buchheit
(ja...@afhaustin.org).
AfH Austin has also been asked to design a shade structure that will
be built in Biloxi. The funding is already in place for construction,
so all we have to do is the fun part. We have the option to just
design the structure or to design and then go to Biloxi to build it.
This project should be a lot of fun. If you are interested in doing
some interesting design work, drawings, or rendering, this project
team is for you. Please contact Jason (ja...@afhaustin.org).
Future Without Poverty - Atamohac Church, Mexico
We are looking to work on some community-centered projects in
Atamohac Mexico. This is another project that will require a fund
raiser. A little money can go a long way in these rural villages. We
have decided to use the Myanmar fund raiser as a learning tool. Fund
raising will start on this one soon. If you are interested in this
project, contact Fred Hubnik (fr...@afhaustin.org).
Architect's Workshop
We are looking to organize an architect's workshop with a local
non-profit that provides support for low-income families looking to
start small businesses. AfH Austin is fortunate enough to be
receiving an experienced new member next month who would like to head
up this endeavor. This effort will require a lot of help, so please
sign up. If you are interested, come out to the June meeting.
The June Meeting is tentatively set for June 10. More information on
that will follow. We hope to see you all then!
