AfH Austin August Meeting

After a brief summer break to focus on individual projects, the
Austin Chapter of Architecture for Humanity is back to our regularly
scheduled program for monthly meetings. This month's meeting will be
on Wednesday, August 20 at 7 pm at the Cedar Door, 201 Brazos St. We
have reserved the back patio, which is a much quieter area.

AfH Austin has had some great recent success and we also have some
exciting new opportunities:

Texas Homeless Network - Transitional Housing

The research portion of our project for the Texas Homeless Network is
wrapping up and we will soon be presenting to THN. Now would be a good
time to join this group, as they prepare for the next stages of the
project.

Biloxi Busch Park Musical Play Scape Design/Build

After several design charettes and a trip to Biloxi, this project has
transformed from a shade structure renovation to an overall master
plan of the park. Our design/build aspect has been re-focused to
another element developed through our master plan. We will be
creating a musical play scape with in an existing grove of trees on
the site. This will give the park a unique play space and highlight
natural features of the site. The project will consist of 3-4 musical
installations to be partially constructed here in Austin and completed
and installed by Biloxi volunteer group Hands On Gulf Coast. Splitting
up the construction provides members with more opportunity to
participate in design and construction without actually traveling to
Biloxi. This is a great design and construction opportunity to
contribute to an under-served community and have fun experimenting
with materials and construction techniques.

AMD Open Architecture Challenge Fund Raiser

In the latter part of September or early October, the international
Architecture for Humanity group will be in Austin to host an event at
the Austin AMD campus to promote technology and architectural design
and raise funds for the Africa Challenge technology and media lab
project that will be built all around Africa next year. AfH Austin
has been asked to coordinate the fund raiser portion of this event
and we are very excited to do so. Since we are on a short time-frame,
we will need all the help we can get.

Day Labor Station

The committee working on this effort is in need of some additional
volunteers. If you are interested in working with City officials,
neighborhood groups, or day laborers, you would be very welcome in
this group.

Two New Volunteer Positions Available

Website Manager - AfH Austin is looking for someone to keep our
website up to date with past and current project information. This
would involve a lot of time up front and less time as we get caught
up.

Public Relations Manager - AfH Austin needs a person who is
interested in issuing a monthly newsletter and sending out regular
announcements. The time commitment for this would be around 5 - 6
hours per month.

If you are interested in either of these positions, please let us
know at the meeting next week.

Please RSVP or send any questions to sam...@afhaustin.org.

Pass the word on to anyone who might be interested. Volunteering with

AfH Austin is a great way to get IDP community service hours. We hope

to see you there!

A few Other Various Announcements

AIA Pro-Bono Guidelines

That's right. The AIA is drafting a set of guidelines for
professional pro-bono work based around Public Architecture's 1%
Solution. The guidelines are in draft form, awaiting approval of the
AIA Board of Directors in the fall. The AIA Pro-Bono guidelines are a
big step forward for both the AIA and the profession as a whole. It is
a good sign that pro-bono culture is taking hold. To download the
draft, go to:
