This meeting is open to all current members and to anyone who has
interest in joining AfH Austin in our efforts to help low-income
communities and individuals as well as non-profits through pro-bono
architectural services. Professionals and semi-professionals with a
wide range of skill levels are welcome. This month, we will meet as
one big group briefly and then break into at least 3 project groups.
Right now, we have several projects underway, many that still require
volunteers:
Biloxi Shade Structure - Design and Construction, Biloxi, MS
A group in Biloxi, Hands On Gulf Coast, has received a grant to
rebuild neighborhood park shade structures destroyed in the 2005
hurricane. Rebuilding these shade structures is a small yet effective
way to tell those coming back that the community is there with them.
Architecture for Humanity Austin has secured the opportunity to
design and build one of these park shade structures. Design will take
place over a few weeks this summer ending with a week long
construction trip in July 2008. Hands On has $1,200 for materials and
all the additional construction volunteers needed. All that is needed
is the help of designers to make these parks the hopeful spaces the
community desperately needs.
We are making a big push to get a dedicated group of volunteers for
this one. Please come join our team.
Fundraiser
The fund raising effort that we started at our previous monthly
meeting may transform depending on the political situation in
Myanmar. Regardless of what happens, we still have several projects
that will benefit from fund raising. We plan to throw one heck of a
party, so please join us to help with brain-storming, signing a
venue, obtaining sponsorship, recruiting artists or firms to
contribute items for an auction, signing bands, decorations, poster
and flyer design, press release, etc.
Texas Homeless Network - Transitional Housing
A project group is working hard on producing a precedent report for
THN. This group will have a progress update on Wednesday. If you are
interested in joining this team, there is always room for one more!
Day Labor Station
The Day Labor Station is a design by Public Architecture that can be
deployed at informal day labor locations. It responds to the
realities of the day labor system and responds to the needs and
desires of the day laborers themselves. A small committee is starting
up on a push to build one of these day labor station in northeast
Austin. They need 2 or three interested people to participate in
their team at this point. Volunteers will need to coordinate with
City and neighborhood officials as well as Public Architecture.
Architectural Workshop
An important new member of AfH Austin is spearheading an
architectural workshop where where architects will give advice to
low-income individuals seeking to become entrepreneurs. There will be
a brief update on this project. We would like a general understanding
of who is interested in participating. We anticipate forming a
committee next month.
Please RSVP or send any questions to sam...@afhaustin.org.
Pass the word on to anyone who might be interested. Volunteering with
AfH Austin is a great way to get IDP community service hours. We hope
to see you there!
