November 2008 Newsletter

**Next meeting:**

The November meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the back
patio of the Cedar Door, 201 Brazos St.

**AFH AUSTIN HAS A LOT GOING ON. DON'T YOU WANT TO HELP?**

Remember: Volunteering with AfH is a great way to get IDP or
Continuing Education hours.

**Project Updates:**

1) Tennis court benches, Dottie Jordan Park, Austin

This is a pilot project to incorporate benches/seating at the tennis
courts at Dottie Jordan Park. The tennis players typically have to
bring their own seating into the courts.

2) Atemajac Church, Atemajac, Mexico

The trip to Atemajac by a small group from AfH Austin is still on
hold. The goal of construction documents being complete by March 2009
remains the same, with construction planned for May/June '09.

3) Texas Homeless Network

Our transitional housing study for the Texas Homeless Network is on
hold pending Homeless Network decisions.

**Help us out with some research:**

1) Find your neighborhood association! When do they meet? What s the
state of any parks in your neighborhood? If they have tennis courts,
are there benches? This information would be really helpful for
potentially expanding the tennis court benches project and taking on
some other public space projects.

2) The Atemajac church project (see above) would get a big boost from
someone willing to do historical/cultural precedent research.

**Project leader still needed:**

We need a person to head up a project for a day labor station
structure. See the details here
<http://www.publicarchitecture.org/design_campaigns/day_labor_station.htm>
. All the pieces are in place for someone to realize this project. It
would be especially helpful to have a Spanish speaker as part of this
project.

AfH Competition: What Can You Do With That Mattress?**

Every year in the U.S., 40 million mattresses get thrown in the
trash. Don't our mattresses deserve another chance? The problem is,
the nature and construction of mattresses has made them difficult to
dispose of.

Architecture for Humanity and Rubicon National Social Innovations
invite entrants to create innovative ways of converting used
mattresses into useful products. The competition aims to encourage
entrants to form groups capable of creating a consumer product,
instructions detailing how to make the product, and a plan for
production on a larger scale.

Dec. 5 is the deadline for registration and submission. For complete
details, go here <http://www.openarchitecturenetwork.org/mattress>
.

Did You Know?**

AfH often works on projects related to immigrant rights. Want to
learn more about the South Texas Colonias, where the population
mostly lives without basic services such as water and sewer systems,
electricity and health facilities? Check out the information provided
by the State Energy Conservation Office
<http://www.seco.cpa.state.tx.us/colonias.htm>
, the South Texas Colonia Initiative

, and a report by the LBJ School of Public Affairs
