Next meeting:
The February meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the back
patio of the Cedar Door, 201 Brazos St.

AfH Austin has a lot going on. Don't you want to help?

Remember: Volunteering with AfH is a great way to get IDP or
Continuing Education hours.

Project Updates:

1) Park benches, Dottie Jordan Park, Austin

This project to incorporate benches/seating at the tennis courts at
Dottie Jordan Park is going strong. The Austin Parks Foundation grant
has been completed. The design team held three charrettes and expects
to have a final design by the end of the month. Further details at
the Feb. 24 meeting.

2) Atemajac Church, Atemajac, Mexico

A small group will be making a site visit March 12-14, so the
precedent study needs to be completed before that time. After the
site visit, we d like to solicit designs through a competition. At
this month s meeting we will go over the details and ask for input.

3) Windsor Community Garden Project, Austin

On Feb. 18 we will be making a presentation about this project to a
UT architecture class, with the hope that some of the students will
be interested in helping for their class project. If you want to be
involved in this project, contact nic...@afhaustin.org.

4) Day Labor Station, Austin

We re thrilled that Ken will be leading the project for a day labor
station structure. See the details here
<http://www.publicarchitecture.org/design_campaigns/day_labor_station.htm>
. He will be doing outreach to the city and community organizations
to get input on needs, location, and structure size (to determine
whether the existing design must be altered). Why not help him out?

The 2009 Open Architecture Challenge: Classrooms

This year's Open Architecture Challenge invites teachers, students
and design professionals to work together to design the classroom of
the future for their school. It's an opportunity for faculty and
students to partner with designers to create a safer, healthier and
more sustainable learning environment and win funding to build or
upgrade a classroom in their school. For complete details, go here
<http://www.openarchitecturenetwork.org/competitions/challenge/2009>
.

If you are interested in participating in this competition but need a
school or architect to partner with, contact nic...@afhaustin.org.

Call for Volunteers

Regarding the Open Architecture Challenge, the AfH national office
passed along a request for a designer to partner with a private
middle school in Niamey, Niger, serving 200 students coming from
low-income families. A majority of their students have been rejected
from government schools because of their poor performance and age, so
they serve as a "second chance" school for these students.

In order to improve the students' learning, become self-sustaining
financially, hire a permanent team of teachers, and reach out to the
local community, they re looking to build 8 extra classrooms. AfH is
trying to find a designer/architect who can partner with this school
for the challenge. They have been very persistent in looking for a
partner, and it would be great if we could find them a designer. If
you re interested, email chal...@architectureforhumanity.org.

Did You Know?

Now that the day labor station project is getting under way, here s
some related information. Daylaborstation.org
<http://www.daylaborstation.org>
is a site created by Public Architecture dedicated to this project
and the social/economic issues it addresses. The FAQs
<http://www.daylaborstation.org/FAQ.htm>
are a great resource. The day labor station project was introduced
as part of the Design for the Other 90%
<http://other90.cooperhewitt.org/>
exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York.
