October 2008 Newsletter
**Next meeting:
The October meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the back
patio of the Cedar Door, 201 Brazos Street.**
**AFH AUSTIN HAS A LOT GOING ON. DON'T YOU WANT TO HELP?**
Now that AIA Austin s homes tour is over, why not direct that
volunteer spirit toward Architecture for Humanity s efforts?
Remember: Volunteering with AfH is a great way to get IDP or
Continuing Education hours.
**Project Updates:**
1. Busch Park Musical Play Scape Design/Build, Biloxi, Mississippi
Our design/build aspect of this project is to create a musical
play-scape within an existing grove of trees in the park. Volunteers
will be needed once construction begins. We ll be sure to let you
know. In the meantime, check out this great article
<http://archrecord.construction.com/features/humanitarianDesign/0810biloxi-1.asp>
on our Biloxi partners, the Gulf Coast Community Design Studio, in
the October issue of Architectural Record.
2. Atemajac Church, Atemajac, Mexico
Due to some delays, the trip to Atemajac by a small group from AfH
Austin planned for the fall will likely happen in early December
instead. The goal of construction documents being complete by March
2009 remains the same, with construction planned for May/June '09.
3. Texas Homeless Network
Our transitional housing study for the Texas Homeless Network is on
hold pending Homeless Network decisions.
**The above projects will be further discussed at the monthly
meeting, as well as these issues:**
1. A potential new project to create benches for Austin parks. We
encourage you to bring other project ideas to the meeting!
2. We need a person to head up a project for a day labor station
structure. See the details here
<http://www.publicarchitecture.org/design_campaigns/day_labor_station.htm>
. All the pieces are in place for someone to realize this project. It
would be especially helpful to have a Spanish speaker as part of this
project.
3. The formation of two AfH Austin teams. We d like to create a
Community Outreach Team that would be able to explain our work to
various local groups. We d also like to create an Architect Education
Team. This group would invite speakers to the monthly meetings who
would give a talk on issues that relate to AfH s mission, such as
low-income housing, living conditions on the border or disaster
relief. This would make the meetings more educational and perhaps
inspire ideas.

AfH Competition: What Can You Do With That Mattress?**
Every year in the U.S., 40 million mattresses get thrown in the
trash. Don't our mattresses deserve another chance? The problem is,
the nature and construction of mattresses has made them difficult to
dispose of.
Architecture for Humanity and Rubicon National Social Innovations
invite entrants to create innovative ways of converting used
mattresses into useful products. The competition aims to encourage
entrants to form groups capable of creating a consumer product,
instructions detailing how to make the product, and a plan for
production on a larger scale.
Dec. 5 is the deadline for registration and submission. For complete
details, go here <http://www.openarchitecturenetwork.org/mattress>
.
**
State of Texas Opportunity**
The Texas Department of Insurance has authorized the appointment of
temporary qualified windstorm inspectors for a limited time. Texas
registered architects are eligible to apply to be temporary
inspectors, who will perform inspections of residential structures
involving the replacement of roof coverings in designated catastrophe
areas. For further information and applications, go here
<http://www.tdi.state.tx.us/wind/index.html>
and scroll down to the "Temporary Qualified Inspectors" section, or
call TDI chief engineer Sam W. Nelson at (512) 322-2212.
**
Did You Know?**
Is it feasible to talk about green design for the poorest of the
poor? This PBS show
<http://www.hulu.com/watch/23337/design-e2-green-for-all>
examines the issue and features AfH founder Cameron Sinclair. Very
cool. Take a look.
Thanks for reading!
