aimage is no longer supported. If you wish to image in AFF format, I recommend using FTK Imager.
Things aren't as bad as you make them out to be.
First, guymager (http://guymager.sourceforge.net/) makes AFF files. And it's multi-threaded. Pretty amazing, that he got that to work with AFF! Give it a try.
Second, you can use afconvert to convert a raw file to an AFF file. I do it all the time.
Third, if you wish to take over maintenance of aimage, you are WELCOME TO DO SO!

No. affconvert isn't designed to work with raw devices.
