Title: Product Design, Development & Certification for Aerospace Applications

Abstract: Product design & development has been largely understood to be confining to meeting the functional requirements only. This understanding needs to change especially in the case of aerospace applications where failure of the product could lead to catastrophes.The talk will address this concern and lay out the steps that must be followed when taking up design of a product for aerospace application. Further, the product design for aerospace application needs to exhibit functional uniformity over a large number of pieces built over a number of years across a number of manufacturing sites and operating globally. This aspect is addressed through building of quality in design where in all design & manufacturing processes conform to Standards such as BS, EN, AISI, ASTM, DIN, ISO,IS, etc.The entire process of design, development & certification will be explicitly summed-up in a flow-chart for good comprehension.  

Speaker: Dr. A K Varma, Director, Institute of Technology at Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University Lucknow

About the Speaker:
Dr. Varma holds a PhD in Mechanical Engg. from IISc Bengaluru, and Masters' in Aerospace from IIT Madras. He has worked for over 35 years in design of Aerospace Systems at HAL, and was the head of its R&D Center at HAL Lucknow. Under his leadership, a large number of products were designed & developed for various aircraft including Advance Light Helicopter, Light Combat Aircraft and Intermediate Jet Trainer programs. He was given the award for Excellence in Design in 1998 by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalaam. After superannuating from HAL, he worked as a Visiting Professor at IIT Kanpur for around 3 years.
