By adding a way to prove to the script (or whatever is used for sign
up) that they are human. Not just by Captcha because that does fail at
times, but a different approach.

What about a question that needs a set answer to work, for instance
like:

"What is the tenth letter of the alphabet, and write that in upper
case."

Sign up won't happen unless the letter J is written in the field.

Or..

"What is the last letter of the word Aeonity, and write that in upper
case."

Sign up won't happen unless the letter Y is written in the field.

It is less standard than normal, so it might just work a little better
with all the bots, and a simple if then rule (C64 language here ;) )
could do the trick on that one.

You can rotate the questions or add arithmetic to the bunch.

Just a thought in any case :)
