Description:

Background:
The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) is the principal institution of the OSCE responsible for the human dimension. ODIHR is active in 56 participating States in the fields of election observations, democratic development, human rights, tolerance and non-discrimination and the rule of law.

ODIHR supports the 56 OSCE participating States and civil society in their efforts to effectively respond to hate-motivated crimes, to promote freedom of religion or belief, and to facilitate mutual respect and understanding. ODIHR’s work is focused on addressing specific forms of intolerance through multi-faceted programmes that address education, law enforcement, legislation, monitoring and the collection and dissemination of information. ODIHR builds the capacity of civil society to recognize and monitor hate crimes and to work on developing effective responses in their communities.

The ODIHR Tolerance and Non-Discrimination Department is looking for an intern for a 6 months period starting in February 2013.

The tasks will comprise of: •Assisting in monitoring the implementation of tolerance and non-discrimination commitments by the OSCE participating States, including research and analysis of developments related to tolerance and non-discrimination; •Assisting in the preparation of written materials including reports, overviews, briefing papers and/or documents on general or specific issues and/or specific countries or regions on tolerance and non-discrimination issues; •Assisting in the preparation and organization of events; •Note-taking; •Performing other related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

Students in the final year of higher education (university or other accredited institution) at graduate or postgraduate level or recent graduates or postgraduates in political sciences, international relations, law, international human rights law or other related fields. •Previous exposure and/or experience in dealing with human rights issues is an asset; •Good working knowledge of English, both oral and written; knowledge of Russian is highly desirable; •Proven competence in research and analytical writing; •Demonstrable organizational, communication and reporting skills; •Cultural sensitivity and judgment; •Ability to operate Windows applications, including word processing and e-mail.

Terms of internship:

For the duration of the internship the person will be covered with life, accident and disability insurance at the cost of the OSCE/ODIHR. The intern will also be able to participate in a group health insurance scheme at his/her own expense. The OSCE/ODIHR is unfortunately unable to pay any remuneration or bear expenses incurred by the intern during the stay in Warsaw or for travel to or from the place(s) of assignment.

The internship lasts six months. It does not constitute a commitment to future employment with the OSCE.
