Hi all,

Yes – we intend for the data to be made freely available through ANU’s AusPass server.  Thanks Peter for the building suggestion.  We are likely to seek further advice on target buildings as the project kicks off.

Thanks also to Scott and Adam for their contributions to the proposal – it was a team effort!

Congratulations to Scott, Trevor and AEES committee on a terrific achievement.

Re Kevin’s point (which I completely agree with), to be able to release data you will probably need to target a public building and one that has a complete set of structural documentation available. The Royal Darwin Hospital would be a good target building to consider.

Kind regards,

Peter

 Well done Scott and AEES

My only caveat is that you make the data publicly available, not just to members.

Dear AEES membership,

I’m pleased to announce that the AEES has been successful in securing $150,000 of government funding via the Commonwealth Government’s Disaster Ready Fund for the structural monitoring of buildings in Darwin. The funding will allow us to install structural monitoring equipment in up to four buildings, with the objective of making structural monitoring data recorded from future earthquakes in the region available to society members for research and teaching purposes.

AEES applied with the Northern Territory Emergency Service. Our application was supported by our members and their associated organisations, which included the Australian National University, Geoscience Australia, Seismology Research Centre, Swinburne University of Technology and Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium). A further $150,000 of funding will be made by the partner organisations from in-kind and direct contributions, making a total of $300,000 to fund the project over 3 years.

The next step of the process is to identify the buildings to install the monitor equipment in. If any members can assist with identifying suitable candidate buildings, it would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, I would like to give a massive thank you to our Immediate Past President, Dr Trevor Allen, who identified the funding source, took the lead on this initiative and made it happen.

Kind regards,

Scott
