Dear colleagues,

As the 2021 AEES AGM minutes foreshadowed (for those that read them), John Wilson is currently in discussions with Standards Australia to kick off the process to revise and update the AS1170.4.  Whilst there are a number of enhancements that will be proposed from the engineering side, this also presents the community with the opportunity to update the seismic hazard information within the Standard.

As the committee (BD-06-11) will likely require the draft Standard by late this year, there is not sufficient time to develop a new model from scratch.  However, there is an opportunity to review and update the 2018 National Seismic Hazard Assessment to address some of the model’s known limitations, as well as some of the community’s concerns.

We are proposing to host an initial virtual kick-off meeting to both review the NSHA18 and identify user needs for an updated hazard model on 7-8 April.  This workshop is intended to prioritise and focus our work, with more technical workshops to be held in the coming months to determine model parameterisation.

We don’t have a detailed agenda as yet, but we anticipate that the workshop will run from approximately 9:30-12:30 (AEDT) on each day (I find it difficult to stay focussed any longer for online meetings!).  The very rough running order will be:

Day 1 – 7 April:

-          Welcome & purpose of workshop (5 mins)

-          BD-06-11 objectives (John Wilson or proxy – 5-10 mins)

-          GA NSHA18 Overview/Reflections (15 mins)

-          Solicited presentations (~5 x 15 mins)

-          Discussion session

Day 2 – 8 April:

-          Summary of Day 1

-          Detailed GA presentations on:

o   Neotectonic Domains

o   Fault model

o   Catalogue

o   Source models

o   Ground motion

o   Final model compilation

-          Discussion: short-term priorities for 2022 update

-          Discussion: long-term objectives

-          Next steps

We will provide more information shortly.  However, if you are interested in attending this virtual meeting, please let me know and I will add you to the mailing list. Please feel free to forward this message to those who you feel might be interested.

Kind regards,

Trevor and the GA NSHA22 team.
