Hi,

I am using Clippings 6.0.2.1. on Firefox 57.0 on a Mac.

As of today, Clippings is totally unusable for me.

I click on the context menu to open it, and get a warning message saying

"Clippings doesn't work when the privacy settings in Firefox are too restrictive, such as turning on Private Browsing. Try changing these to their defaults and restart Firefox."

I don't use Private Browsing, and turned off Ghostery (ad-blocking software) but that made no difference. I can't find any relevant settings in Firefox but maybe I am not looking in the right place...

What is going on?

How do I fix this?

Thanks

This can also happen if the Firefox setting to "Never remember history" is turned on.  Turning off browser cookies is also known to interfere with WebExtension functionality.

If none of these is the cause, then it is likely that the database used by Clippings is corrupted.  Should that be the case, you'll need to run Refresh Firefox (more info here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings), then reinstall Clippings.

Hi, Alex,

There is no "never remember history" option in my settings.

I have "remember my browsing and download history" turned on,
and also "clear history when closing Firefox" turned on, so the browser remembers my history while in use, but clears the history when I quit the browser.

Also, I have "accept cookies from websites" turned on, and have turned on "never accept 3rd party cookies".

Would these settings cause a problem?

No, they should not.

So that leaves Refresh Firefox as the only other option.

I have two versions of Firefox, the current one and an old FF56.0 version because FF57.0 killed 80% of my extensions.
If I do Refresh Firefox, would that wipe the old extensions in my old FF56.0 version?

Update:

I tried deleting Clippings from my old FF56, closed it, and then opened the new FF57, where Clippings was missing (as expected/intended).

I then tried to re-install Clippings, but got the message:  "Project web is currently offline pending the final migration of its data to our new datacenter." (just a coincidence?)

I ignored that message and tried to use Clippings in a Gmail mail. The message about restrictive privacy settings has gone and I am able to use the extension again.

Are you using the same user profile in both versions of Firefox that you have installed? It is recommended that you have separate profiles for Firefox 56 and for Firefox 57.

BTW - The AE Creations website is temporarily down for maintenance; if you need to reinstall Clippings, do so from the Mozilla Add-ons page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/clippings/

Thanks for the advice. I have created a different profile for my other FF version using the profile manager. Clippings is compatible with the latest FF but so many other add-ons aren't. I don't know who is to blame, Mozilla or the developers, but as a user, having the majority of my add-ons become unusable overnight sucks. Kudos to AE Creations for adapting/updating your extension.
