Our Cross Ice program is perfect for kids aged 4 to 13 who want to develop their hockey skills. No previous hockey experience needed. Kids just need to have basic skating ability, and we will take it from there! At Walker Ice and Fitness Center (WIFC), players get to progress at their own pace and the emphasis of Cross Ice is on making hockey fun! Friday night skill-based practices start at 5 pm and the Sunday 12pm sessions have skill skates and game day.

Cross Ice at WIFC is the best value in West Michigan! Our program is just $445 and includes ice time twice per week, a jersey, the Van Andel Jamboree and expert instruction led by Coach Mike Fountain and his coaching staff. This helps our program stand out, as very few Cross Ice Programs are personally run by a facility Hockey Director with Mike's playing and coaching background. Coach Mike understands, as a former professional player and as a dad, the importance of making hockey fun for young players. If you are signing up late, the cost will be pro-rated. If you'd like more information on the pro-rated cost, email Gillian.

If you're not ready for Cross Ice, we have sessions of Learn to Skate and Learn to Play hockey offered year-round. For both Cross Ice and Learn to Skate/Play, sign up at using our online registration portal.

Our Cross Ice Program skates twice a week. We run skill-based practices and have in-house game days. Our team of dedicated coaches is led by our Hockey Director, Mike Fountain. The program also includes a jersey and Jamborees (games against other associations).

The "typical" path is to start out in Learn to Skate and Play Hockey, but it's not mandatory. In Cross Ice, all we require are basic skate skills and we can take it from there. If you're not sure where to begin, we recommend you email Coach Mike.

We do offer clinics and camps during the summer, including drop-in clinics for Cross Ice. We don't offer a full summer Cross Ice session, as it's good for kids to play multiple sports to help them become well-rounded athletes! USA Hockey has helpful information on this issue.

Cross Ice is scaled better for children and actually helps improve player development! USA Hockey estimates that the typical adult player takes 15 to 17 strides to skate end-to-end on 200 feet of ice. It takes an 8-year-old 14 to 16 strides to skate 85 feet cross-ice, so Cross Ice is perfect for younger players. It helps players develop skills that allow them to "skate the game" as they develop small area skills and the ability to deal with other players at close quarters.

Our program is unique in West Michigan, as it is City-run - this means we can offer the best value at just $395 for a full Cross Ice season. It is also run personally by our Hockey Director, Mike Fountain, who brings many years of professional playing experience to his coaching. No other area hockey program has a head coach with Mike's level of experience and hands-on dedication to teaching hockey skills to all our players.

To improve the overall quality of our open hockey sessions, the Ice Den Chandler allows goalies to participate for free in adult hockey sessions. Maximum four (4) goalies per session. Goalies must register in advance.

ALL players must register online in advance. No Drop-Ins permitted. Players cannot register on behalf of or hold a spot for another player. Each player must book a roster spot on the scheduled session. No exceptions.
