Hi!

I'm looking for a script that can update all text ads in a Google Ads account that have a certain label, based on the headlines/descriptions from a spreadsheet URL with start and stop dates (in order to queue ads/promotions).

We run a lot of promotions in the company I work for and I am spending much of my time updating text ads for 7 different accounts over two brands.

Has anyone seen such a script? I have googled myself blue but can only find bits and pieces of scripts that would be able to do this, but not the one I'm looking for.

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards,
Martina

Hey Martina,

I have seen script like this but this seem really specific and I'm sure any script you find like this would need certain modifications to make it work exactly as you need.

Have you tried writing your own script? Or modifying an existing one?

I'm really curious how much time you spend updating these ads. I write scripts and I'm always curious how much time a script can save in labour.

Hi Martina,

Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, Ad properties cannot be modified once they are created; you can update only its status and device preference properties through the Google Ads Scripts.

I would also like to inform you that the creation of text ads is deprecated in favor of expanded text ads. You will not be able to create new text ads after October 26, 2016. Text ads may be retrieved and will continue to serve as usual. To create new ads, we recommend using expanded text ads instead. See the Ad Types guide for more information.

For future reference when creating expanded text ads, you may want to consider using Ad Params or Ad Customizers for flexibility of changing ads properties. Let me know if you have other questions.

@Kurvin: Thanks for your insights. Much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Harry!

Thank you for your answer.

I meant expanded text ads but clumsily wrote text ads because, as you said, the old text ads aren't available any more.

Regarding updating expanded text ads, as this is a feature that is available through the Google Ads Editor I thought that I would be able to do so. If the changes are minor, the editor often chooses to update my ads rather than creating new ones (which can be annoying and helpful).

Would I perhaps be able to update the ads If I use dynamic parameters in the ad, which are based on a spread sheet?

Kind regards,
Martina

Hi Kurvin!

Thank you for taking time to answer my question.

Do you perhaps know where I can find a script that is similar to what I'm looking for? I'm sure that it will need to be modified, but something is better than nothing in my case! I don't know how to write scripts myself (I wish I could!), which is why I'm reaching out.

I spend an hour or two every time there are promotion changes every other week, which is not to bad. However, if I can change this to 15 minutes so I can use my time more effectively that would be great.

Kind regards,
Martina

Hi Martina,

Yes, it would be possible if you would like to update Ad Customizers with data coming from a spreadsheet. You may refer to these examples on using Ad Customizers and these examples for using the Spreadsheet Service.

Hi Martina,

adsscriptsforumadvisor has pointed you towards some resources that are pretty good for implementing Ad Customizers which automatically update your expanded text ads based on keyword search triggers.

A bit of piecing together and some modifications would make the script you compose fit for your purpose.

It just so happens that I'm keenly interested in your problem and the solution as I've recently done some work with Ad Customizers scripts for clients.

I would love for you to let me know if the resources you have been pointed towards have been sufficient in aiding you solving your problem.

If you have any issues with the process of producing a solution I'd like to know about them as well.

Regards
Kurvin

Hi Kurvin!

I have looked at the script codes, but I will have too learn the fundamentals of writing scripts as I don't know how to match the snippets together correctly.

Kind regards,
Martina

Hi Martina,

You don't need a script for this. Set up an ad customizer feed in the 'business data' section of your Google Ads account and use startDate/endDate in feed to queue promos.
There is no need to make any changes to the ads when you update promotions. Only change the values in your feed.

If you need to run different promos at the same time or diff promos to diff parts of the account, you can set target campaigns and target adGroups/keywords in the feed - and these can be filtered using your labels.

I see! But from what I understand the ad customizers target specific campaigns, right? I want the script to target all ads with a certain label.

Kind regards,
Martina

Ad customizers is a way to insert dynamic content from a feed into ads. It will be inserted in all ads where you add the placeholders - unless you specify otherwise in the feed e.g. that it should only appear in certain adGroups or whatever.

It doesn't needs scripts - so this is the wrong forum to discuss it.
