There are so many options when it comes to automated bid management.

Automated bid management:
using scripts
using conversion rate optimizer
using enhanced CPC
using 3rd party tools
using API – build your own
using scripts

This is our scenario.

We manage PPC marketing (lead generation) for 100s of clients (local businesses). We want to automate as much as possible.

Which one of the methods would be best to us.

We would prefer to create our own inhouse solution using the API. However, I would like to understand the process (logic) of how that would work so that I can understand the algorithm (when we create our solution using the API).

Hi,
  The AdWords API has it's own forum.  You can read about how to obtain access to the AdWords API here.

Based on the scope of your use cases, the AdWords API can solve your problems.  You might want to check out that forum and/or the docs to gain a better understanding of how it all works.  Please keep in mind that the AdWords API is a lot more complex than AdWords scripts and will require a software engineer to utilize effectively.

AdWords Scripts is still a new product and does not expose the same degree of functionality that the AdWords API does.  We're actively soliciting feedback from potential users and advertisers and we appreciate hearing your use-cases.  We'll definitely be considering your use case (and some of the others you've posted) when researching new features to add.
