Script after switching on the "New scripts experience" seems to be frozen and cannot be terminated

Hi everyone!

I have migrated my script (which I use to check for redirections of the URLs of the ads). The script consists of several functions and, of course, some global (public) variables, that could be accessed from every function. To test the proper functionality of the script (if the "new experience" works well), I have decided to put a short logging message (using Logger.log() function) as the very first statement of the main() function.

The problem is, that after previewing the script (or even running it), I am waiting like forever (till the script times out - after approx. 90 minutes), whether something happens and whether the logging message shows up in the Logs. Unfortunately nothing happens (while Previewing - the time is counting, but no log output shows up). When I try to terminate the script, nothing happens and I have absolutely no clue where to search for the problem (after switching off the "new script experience", the script runs just perfectly - like it used to run previously, and as it is expected).

I am also considering, whether something went wrong after switching to the new experience (in the inner system of Google Ads), or there is some "legacy" code in the "background" that is doing some nasty stuff - literally, I have no clue. Should I create a completely new script and just copy-paste the old script and test it out? Or there is some issue in the side of Google?

Thanks in advance for any response, and wishing everyone a pleasent day!

With best regards,
Tomáš Bako

Hi Tomáš,

This is Yasmin from the Google Ads scripts team.

Thank you for outlining the issue you've encountered, I was able to follow through and get an idea of the behaviour. On that note, however, we would be needing some information from you in order to test the script's functionality on our end. Would you be so kind as to share with us the following details so we can further our investigation and assist you accordingly?:

  • Google Ads account ID / CID
  • Script name
  • Screenshot of the error
  • Shareable link (guide) of your spreadsheet, if applicable.

Kindly send the requested items via `Reply privately to author` option. If the said option is not available on your end, you may send those through the email alias `googleadsscr...@google.com` instead.

Regards,

second this, I've had similar experiences.

Even when removing everything from the main function, and limiting it to only log "Hello world", nothing happens.

It looks like the script is dead.

Copy pasting the code in a newly created script does work though. So that might be your quick fix for now.

But it's definitely weird.

Reposting the last inquiry (https://groups.google.com/g/adwords-scripts/c/hK7O2NB7Vl0) from the forum as it wasn't routed to our support queue.

Hi everyone,

and huge excuses for my late response - probably I didn't turn on the notifications for this thread so I wasn't aware of any responses :(...

However, the problem seems to have disappeared already on it's own, so the issue seems to be solved :). I've left the script as it was, and after a couple of days it just started to work as it should, and now doesn't become frozen - it actually finishes as it should (after a few seconds, and with the proper log messages). I presume there was some reset in the inner systems of Google (or mby an update of the API? hard to say).

Anyway, thanks again for your proposition for help. Have a great day everyone!

Hi All,

This is Yasmin from the Google Ads scripts team. Please excuse us as your messages failed to be routed to our support queue. We truly do appreciate your patience and understanding on this.

@Nils - Thank you so much for providing your insights on this.

@Tomáš - I'm glad to know that the issue got resolved and you're not experiencing this behaviour anymore. You could try Nils' suggestion to recreate and reauthorize the script if you do encounter it again.

If the issue persists, please let us know along with your Google Ads account ID / CID as well as the script's name where you had observed this so we can further our investigation and assist accordingly.

Yasmin
