Hello team,

We're reaching out to inquire about potential changes to script authorization policies that may be affecting one of our clients. This client manages over 100 accounts with multiple scripts configured for each account, where most scripts are scheduled to run daily and others at various frequencies. They configure these scripts at the account level through MCC login, using the same email address consistently across all configurations.

The issue we're experiencing began in April 2024, when scripts started failing randomly for specific accounts.
When this happens, all scripts for that particular account fail simultaneously due to authorization errors, requiring the user to manually re-authorize each script.
What's particularly concerning is that this client never experienced any authorization issues prior to April, and neither the script code nor the configuration email has changed. To date, they've encountered this problem across more than 60 accounts.

Since the technical setup has remained consistent while authorization failures appeared suddenly in April, we suspect there may have been changes to the script authorization framework. Could you help us understand if any modifications were made to authorization policies that might explain this pattern of random account-level failures?

We would appreciate any insights you can provide regarding potential policy changes that might be contributing to these authorization issues.

Thank you for your assistance with this matter.

Hi,

Thank you for reaching out to the Google Ads Scripts support team.

I would suggest you create a new script or duplicate the existing script to authorize it. Also, before executing the script, I recommend authorizing it by referring to the Authorization document. If the authorize button isn't visible, you might need to create a new script to authorize it.

If you continue to experience issues even after creating a new script and authorizing it, please share the below details :
  • Google Ads account IDs / CIDs
  • Name of the affected scripts.
  • Error details or screenshot of the issue (if any)
You can send the details via Reply privately to the author option, or direct private reply to this email.

Thanks,

Hi,

Please be informed that we have already responded to that email. I could see that the scripts in the account (114-715-5498) are working fine without any authorization issue. Also, I have checked some of the accounts listed in the attachment and the scripts are working fine without any issue.

If you still face any issues kindly get back to us with the Google Ads account ID, the name of the affected script which is failing.

Thanks,

Hey team,

We waited for a long time to see the reply on the private mail itself, but still nothing. Hopefully it didn't have any additional information.

For the issue itself, even though it's not happening for the user currently due to the fact that the client actively checks and fixes these issues; we still really wanted to understand the underlying cause for the same. Because according to the client nothing has changed in past few years now in the process they follow, but they started facing these issues since this February.

If we could get some clarity on it, some best practices or non-common possible reasons specific for the user.

Thanks & Regards,
Ayush

Hi,

Once after receiving the required information from your end, we have validated all the accounts and observed that the scripts ran successfully without any authorization errors. Normally this issue occurs when a script is being changed and hasn't been re-authorized before the execution. You can also go through the Consent Unbundling in Google Ads Scripts regarding the granular level of authorization that takes place before the script execution.

Thanks,
Google Ads Scripts team

Hey team,

The client again faced the issue for an account, and we have asked them to not fix it for the time being.
The details have been shared over an email, which should help with the investigation.

Please also share your reply in this forum itself with any update (leaving out any sensitive information), since we have been unable to receive any email replies from your end.

Thanks,
Ayush

https://developers.google.com/google-ads/scripts/docs/limits

"Authorized scripts

OAuth2 is used to authorize scripts. Each account has a limit of 250 authorized scripts. Beyond that limit, one of the previously authorized scripts will be deauthorized. This is only temporary, and the script can be reauthorized the next time it is opened."

Check if you have more than 250 scripts..

FWIW:
You can review permissions granted to your scripts and other applications by navigating to https://www.google.com/settings/security and clicking “Manage access”. From there you can de-authorize any scripts if you need to.

Hope this helps,
