Oh my goodness heart attack! Looks like the blog post says API changes 2022 luckily :-)

Given the scripts are lagging behind on the Shopping (Merchant) API 2.1, it would be horrific if all our Google Ads scripts suddenly stopped working.

Sorry for the panic, Petra! You're right; it's April 2022 :D

Hello Rez,

Thanks for reaching out. I can confirm that the Google Ads Script does use AdWords API services for some of its functionalities, but is not used as a whole. For example, the AdWords Query Language (AWQL) is required to generate Reports in scripts.

In light of the AdWords API being sunset on April 27, 2022, allow me to reach out to the rest of the team if I could somehow get initial insights on what could be the effects of this in the Google Ads Scripts side and update you once I get more information. On the other hand, the Google Ads Scripts already supports the ability to perform searches directly from the Google Ads API by using the Google Ads Search that is in the Beta version. The Google Ads Query Language is used in this regard.

Let me know if you have questions or other concerns.

Thanks,

Hi Harry,

Thanks for your quick reply. I understand that report also supports GAQL. I'm guessing what we should expect is to support shifting from AWQL which uses AdWords API to GAQL which uses Google Ads API, right?

As a tangential question (and please feel free to let me know if I need a new post for this): how's Google Ads Search any different than Google Ads Report feature? It seemed to me that it's able to submit the same queries, but the response's structure is different.

Also, a tangential comment: I noticed that unlike the examples given here and here to specify the apiVersion, with report and search features, the versions of GAQL are selected with the tags such as 'v7', and not '7' as I receive an Exception: Specified version '7' not supported. error if I run my queries following the documentation examples.

Sincerely,
Rez

Hello,

Yes, the AdWords API sunset will affect scripts. We are doing everything we can to maintain as much backwards compatibility for scripts as is possible. I can't get into many specific details of what exactly will happen yet, but we are hard at work on this and will share more information on our official blog as soon as it is ready. Please make sure to check there regularly for updates.

Regards,
Mike, Google Ads API Team
