We use a script to dynamically update our sitelink extensions, but recently Google have released 'Upgraded Extensions' that do not seem to be compatible with the script.  When we run the script, it makes legacy extensions which do not serve as we have some upgraded extensions which seem to get priority.

Does anyone know whether Google scripts support the new upgraded extensions?

It looks like the new sitelink format is supported in scripts. You'd need to upgrade your script to get it to work though.

Cheers
Sigurd

Hey Sigurd,

I think that is referring to building a new sitelink in the account, rather than new as in upgraded unfortunately.  The script already calls new.SitelinkBuilder()  .

Thanks,
Alistair

Hi Alistair,

Yeah, I was a little too quick there.

It looks like Google is changing from feed based to assed based extensions. So far the latter seems to be only available through the Google Ads API

Cheers
Sigurd

Hi Alistair,

I work along Teejay on the same team. Allow me to assist you on this.

It looks like you are referring to Asset-based extensions which was recently announced to replace feed based extensions and as pointed out by Sigurd. Let me raise this to our wider team for further insights and clarifications. Rest assured that I will be able get back to you with more information once available. Kindly let us know of anything we can assist you with in the meantime.

@Sigurd: Appreciate your comments on the matter.

Hello Thomas,

Thanks for getting back to us.

As per this blog, Google Ads scripts now supports asset-based video ads. As for the other asset-based extensions, another blog entry should be posted for this once available. Please keep an eye for any updates or new releases instead.

Hey Mark and team,

Similar problem here. I can't even get the example scripts to work: https://developers.google.com/google-ads/scripts/docs/examples/sitelinks?hl=en

I get the following errors/output:

Old (preview): No error logs, all changes implemented.
Beta (preview): "An error occurred. Please try again later."
Running:
  • Change description: "Sitelink extension added: Music". Error: "An error occurred. Please try again later."
  • Log: "We're sorry, a server error occurred. Please wait a bit and try again. (file Code.gs, line 4)  "
Is it not possible to use the "old" feed-based extension builder anymore?

Thanks,
SM

Thanks, Teejay. Unfortunately, the current script does not work because the feed-based extensions have been deprecated (before Ad Script support was ready). Are there any workarounds in the meantime?

Thanks,
SM

Hi SM,

The team is currently updating the Google Ads Script to align its feature/functionalities to Google Ads API. I'm afraid that there's no workaround for this. We ask our user for their patience during this time.

Hi Teejay,

We have exactly the same issue here, and are unable to update our sitelinks or adapt the script for asset based extensions.

I had hoped one workaround might be through the bulk upload tool, however upon checking this does not cater to extensions.

Therefore, this is really urgent - are you able to provide an update on when asset-based extensions will be available through scripts?

Many thanks,

JP

Hello Jonathan,

I’m James, a member of the Google Ads scripts support team. Allow me to assist you further.

I believe that the asset-based extension is now fully supported in the new script experience version, you just need to follow this guide on how you can migrate to asset-based extensions.

Let me know if you have any questions.
