Clarification on Recommendation Level via Google Ads API

Hi Team

I’m currently working on fetching recommendations using the Google Ads API (v18). I’m using the query builder tool (https://developers.google.com/google-ads/api/fields/v18/recommendation_query_builder) and able to successfully retrieve recommendation data.

I would like to confirm if there is a way, either through a field or attribute in the recommendation resource, to identify the level at which the recommendation is applicable — for example:

• Account level

• Campaign level

• Ad group level

It would be very helpful to have a programmatic way to distinguish this context so that we can organize and present the recommendations appropriately in our UI.

Thank you for reaching out to the Google Ads API support team.

There is no field or attribute in the Google Ads API recommendation resource that can help you identify the level at which the recommendation is applicable. Though there is no way to identify the level, the recommendation.type will give you a more granular kind of recommendation being offered. 

However, if you select the field recommendation.campaign and if it is populated with a campaign resource name, it indicates that the recommendation is campaign-level. The recommendations types that this field is set is mentioned in this guide. Similarly, if the field 'recommendation.ad_group' is populated with an ad group resource name, the recommendation is ad group-level. The recommendations types that will set this field are described in this guide. If none of the above are populated, the recommendations are 'likely' Account level. Example recommendation type: IMPROVE_GOOGLE_TAG_COVERAGE. I hope this clarifies.

Also, I could see that you are working with 'v18’ of the Google Ads API. Please be informed that the ‘v18’ will be deprecated by June 2025, and will sunset by September 2025. So, I would suggest you upgrade to the latest version, 'v20', as soon as possible to benefit from new features. You may refer to this documentation on deprecation and sunset for more information regarding the specific deprecation and sunset dates for each available version.
