In the AdWords API docs, Report Types, Search Query Performance Report field list, there is a note for the Query field that reads as follows: "If the string for this attribute is longer than 128 char bytes, the returned result will NOT be a single aggregated row". What does this note mean exactly? How would I know that this has occurred and handle the result accordingly?

Hello Stepanian,

In this case you will get multiple rows where all columns are the same except to Query field.

Thank you so much for you response.

I have a couple of follow up questions: What would be in the Query columns for these rows? How many rows would I get for each record? How would I know if these are the same record split up into multiple rows or if they are separate records?

Thanks again!

Hello Stepanian,

I've checked with the team and clarified the behavior. Effectively, this text means that the "Query" field will be truncated, so if you have a few queries that a longer than 128 chars and first 128 chars are the same, you will end up with a few rows (one per query) with the same contents of the "Query" column (first 128 chars).

We'll re-word the documentation for clarity.

-Danial.

The documentation is still misleading:

Hi Sebastian,

The description provided for the Query field in the Search Query Performance Report means that if the search term has differences beyond the 128th byte, they will not be aggregated to provide performance statistics in a single row in the report. Rather, there will be multiple rows for each search term with the corresponding performance stats. If you find more than one row with the same Query, this means that the search string has been truncated in the report and has differences beyond the 128th byte.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Shwetha, AdWords API Team.
